Gou couldn't understand why he felt like he had been torn into two when he saw Kanya evolve.
Was it because his trainer picked the cat instead of him? Was he jealous of such a display of raw power, one of which that he too felt like was hiding inside him, waiting to be tapped and discovered? When he searched himself, he could sense awe and admiration when watching Kanya - it was like he was at home with himself, and Gou thought that wasn't possible, because he seemed satisfied when he evolved the first time, or was he wrong then? Had he become content too quickly? So soon?
<Kon, can I..?>
His trainer had also been transfixed at the display, and he could see a smile getting bigger on his lips. He then noted the Monferno's voice trailing off and then seemed to move his hands in the air. ❝Sorry, Gou, it looks like it'll only let me do it once. Or maybe if the prompt comes up again...❞
The Monferno gritted his teeth, but tried not to look so disappointed, so frustrated. <It's okay, I was just curious.>
It's only temporary. It will disappear when they leave the tower.
But he knew that Kanya would keep talking about it after, relish in it, desire it once again. He didn't fault him in that - if anything, the Monferno felt that he should do the same; he couldn't be satisfied with what he had now when there was clearly something more he hadn't felt.
The final prompt came up for the floor, and none of the Pokemon (not even Kanya's fully evolved form) could clear it. Arthur returned the Onix to his Poke Ball before pulling out Eru again, who immediately commented on the cat's new and dazzling appearance, before moving to use Mega Drain (as commanded by her trainer) on the last Pidgey. The DJ did not struggle nor flee; instead he let one more song play before it succumbed to weak knees and fell on the floor, its eyes on the ceiling with a tear in its eyes.
Right, well, it was time to keep moving. They had stayed here long enough.

...well, Arthur had already told himself he should expect the unexpected, but he still found himself rather surprised. Dumbfounded even.
The UI playfully popped up at him, saying that the branches were UNDER CONSTRUCTION (even if they were fully formed, not a stray pixel in sight), and it reminded him more like a murder scene or something that involved the police compared to a construction site. Perhaps if the Pidgeys wielded jack hammers and hard hats, he would be more convinced (actually some of them were following the building code and had tiny yellow hard hats on their heads, but that was as far as it went). A number of them had yellow tape rolls between their beaks, flying around to cover more of the branches, making it more dangerous to get across. Well, fine, he supposed they just had to remove them!
He didn't quite get the prompt though. Just use any move? Twice? Well, that was what he told Gou to do. Use whatever move that could get him to pull off the yellow tape (twice). And the Monferno was similarly confused but did as told, leaping into a free space with Acrobatics before expertly moving from branch to branch, ripping out ribbons and knocking a hard hat Pidgey with a kick along the way.

...really? Bring Onix out here? The branches that were underneath this particular floor still looked plenty sturdy (it had to support a number of players and their Pokemon at any given time), but it was notably a tiny bit thinner, or seemingly more shaky compared to the previous floor, and all of the Pidgeys were up there while they were down here.
Well, there was not much of a choice. He couldn't get his rewards until he completed the tower, so he only really had one worm to rely on. He switched out the Cottonee to bring out the rock snake, whose size ended up hitting one of the intertwining branches and tearing some of the tape just by merely existing. <I am not appreciative of this space.>
❝Yeah I know, can you clear some room?❞
The Onix managed to move his head around by lowering his body before opening his mouth and releasing another Smack Down energy ball at a cluster of traffic cones, branches, and signs. Debris started to fall to which the rock snake sheltered the trainer and his two other Pokemon from. The Pidgey squawked in panic, their work being dismantled.

Gou tried to swallow some of the unpleasant initial emotions he had in the previous floor by approaching Kanya and striking conversation. The prompts were not cycling to them at the moment, but for some reason Arthur had not moved to withdrawing either of them just yet, so it gave a small space to talk, if not for a short while. In the background, the trainer withdrew Onix again, shouting a quick sorry and thanks, before letting out Mugan, who hadn't actually seen the previous two floors. He let out an excited roar before he was commanded to use Dragon Tail on a long line of traffic cones and the Pidgey setting them up, just to mess with it. The dragon clambered forward before clumsily swinging his tail across, knocking over plastic cones like bowling pins.
<You look rather jealous, Gou.>
The Monferno clicked his tongue, suddenly regretting trying to talk to him. <Was it that obvious?>
The Meowscarada grinned. It was hard to tell whether it was mocking or comforting. <Don't feel bad, I would've reacted worse if I were in your position.>
<I don't even understand why I feel bad.>
Kanya swirled one of his paws; a small green gust formed above his gesture. <Sometimes it's easier to think of what to do next rather than the why.> a brief pause; his expression becoming softer. <I learned that from you.>

Gou was rather shocked by the masked cat's admission. It made him feel better, actually, grounding himself for a moment, remembering why he wanted to get stronger in the first place. <...right. Thank you. I...> he reflected on this moment from the entirety of his existence so far; one that mainly started the moment he opened his eyes to find his trainer looking at him, with wonder and curiosity, questions at the tip of his tongue. Since then, he had fought, made decisions, built brick by brick, memory over memory. If he got to speak to his past self for a moment (he had a past now?), what would he think?
Arthur, by the way, was completely oblivious to the existential crisis his starter was going through and let out a frustrated noise when he had to switch Pokemon again to deal with the prompt, which seemed to be cycling between a set where only one Pokemon in his team could complete it. He apologized to Mugan and switched him out, noting that his other two Pokemon were having a conversation without him elsewhere (he just let them be, he knew that they were pretty close, or at least had a tendency to confide in each other, push each other's buttons). He then brought out Eru again, who was confused why she was being called out again, to which the trainer had to explain the three Pokemon limit and can she Mega Drain one of those non-hardhat wearing Pidgeys.
<Yeah sure!>
And Arthur was surprised to see that the Pidgey was none the wiser. Maybe he didn't perceive Eru as a threat before it was too late.

Finally, he could call one of his other active Pokemon into the fray. He called for Gou, who seemed a little dazed at first before running up to his trainer, ready to battle. Arthur just pointed to a particularly dense bunch of yellow tape and told him to burn it so that they could be on their merry way. It was actually block their pathway and the staircase to the next floor was somewhere further in the mess of signs telling them to stop (in the name of whatever law they were invoking).
The Monferno didn't know why he suddenly felt nervous, afraid of messing up, where there was no pressure nor consequence for it (and no reason, fire was as natural as breathing). Shaking his head to right himself, he inhaled deeply before releasing a much bigger blast of flame - the biggest he had ever down aside from the Z-Move from earlier. Was this a result from the temporary upgrade? Well, it did burn the tape off quite well, and a stray Pidgey along with it.

❝Gou, did you--?❞
The Monferno realized that it must've meant the prompt appeared again, but he shook his head. <No, I'll...evolve on my own terms.> with his own strength, not with the temporary boost and strangeness of the tower. Arthur nodded before calling for Kanya, who was the only Pokemon now that could clear the criteria. The Meowscarada was happy to oblige, jumping up onto the branches (not as expertly as Gou, but he was able to navigate easily enough), looking for his target before finding a hard at work Pidgey using a hammer on a sign. He rushed in, claws glowing, and this time around it was cloaked with an orange, fiery flame.
When Kanya brought it down, he actually deliberately missed, just a feather away from the Pidgey's head, which basically scared him shitless and left him defenseless for a little forehead flick. The Pidgey seemed to shout some kind of avian cuss words as it flew off.

If it was not noticeable a while ago, Arthur could feel that he and his Pokemon were getting fatigued by the daunting tower. From the dancing Pidgey to the construction Pidgey, it was back to back attacks, tackles, burns, and all sorts of other things, to name a few. Well, thankfully, in their ransacking of the construction site, the trainer only realized then that there were a few hard-at-work Pidgey left, guarding the materials with their feathery bodies. This would be easy pickings, so long as the prompts stayed faithful. He would take repeating prompts any day over one that would stop him from being unable to proceed.
❝Gou, throw another Mach Punch.❞
The Monferno closed in, and without warning, slammed one of the birds with his fist, sending him to a bundle of tape that acted like a not so comfortable pillow, bouncing him onto the branch.

Hm, that was how it was going to be, huh? At least they were alternating Pokemon so that one could catch their breath for the moment while the other swooped in. He told Gou to pull back while Kanya would take the stage again with another Slash, though the cat complained that he wished he could use other moves in his arsenal instead of the same one over and over.
❝Sorry, this is what the tower wants.❞
<The tower sucks!> he shouted in reply before slicing into one out of three of the remaining Pidgey; the tape in its beak falling lifelessly onto the ground. That left two more to go for this one. What would the next floor bring? They were rather close...

❝Okay now you can use another move besides Slash.❞
<Seriously? What else can I do anyway?>
Arthur flicked through the UI that contained Kanya's new moveset, which highlighted which ones were valid for the current prompt. He didn't recognize this particular one, and it seemed to fit with the cat's motif of being some kind of...err, their magician? That was what the designers were going for, right? ❝Try using Trick.❞
At the moment the command was given, it was like Kanya knew what to do, but also was like, seriously? though he supposed he could see some advantages to this in battle, like getting an item that he needed or something. So he looked at one of the Pidgeys that were holding a hammer and concentrated. His body then glowed a light green all over before he raised one of his hands with an open paw-palm. The next thing the Pidgey knew, the hammer disappeared from its feathery grasp and was teleported over to the cat, and it shocked it so much that it screamed and disintegrated like one of those memes on the internet. Weird.

The final Pidgey for this floor! Arthur wanted to preemptively celebrate even if they were not at the halfway mark yet (that thought immediately sent him spiraling down into tired depression, because they weren't half way there yet? Seriously?). Well, he supposed that four floors on his own was something to celebrate, at least! The last prompt was easily attainable by Gou too - it was nice that he didn't have to switch constantly all the time, and Eru was trying to keep them at slightly better shape with some healing Fairy Wind.
❝Let's try using one of your new moves too, Gou. Finish it off with Fire Spin!❞
The Monferno nodded before letting the move's knowledge course through him. He opened his mouth and release a burst of fire, but this one swirled like it was alive, like it was a serpent, coiling around the terrified hardhat Pidgey and trapping it in a vortex before burning it to a crisp (but the body looked like the anime-friendly ones, where it was just a little charred with swirly eyes). Arthur let out a sharp, fatigued exhale. It was time to climb to the next floor, amidst the burning tape and slightly melted signs.

Well...this was different.
The party ascended the steps, and Arthur wondered where he placed in the grand scheme of things, but with all of the destruction that they did a while ago, it was a pretty clear path up the branches (though both Kanya and Gou had to help him climb up a few of these - they were really steep okay? like one branch between another, he had to pull his whole up like he was traversing a mountain). When the UI said that they were on the next floor, it turned out it was already the top of the tree? That couldn't be right. Weren't there still fifty more Pidgey to deal with or something like that? He also tried to focus on the vines that were hung and wrapped and arched all over the canopy, and he could've sworn that some of them wriggled. Writhed. Shook. Shuddered.
He grimaced, but at least this seemed to be a really good place for Gou to let loose. As expected, when he glanced at his Pokemon, the fire type was already sparkling at all of the places he could swing around. He still waited for permission from Arthur, though.
❝Yeah, sure, the next prompt's for you anyway. Try to get a Fury Swipes on one of the Pidgey hiding around here.❞
He nodded, though the birds were not exactly hiding. They could be spotted on the upper branches, the tippiest tops, ready to strike. Well, it would be Gou meeting them on their turf rather than the other way around, grabbing on one of the trunks to climb before moving onto vines and wood, and then when he got close, much quicker than the birds anticipated, they couldn't escape powerful swipes that cut them down.

It was then Kanya's turn as the next prompt went up and a bird fell into the ground and disappeared. The masked cat smirked before running up to the trees - he didn't need to climb up to strike them, sending his flower bomb up there instead. It once again winked out of sight before suddenly appearing right beside one of the birds and then exploding; the force enough to slam a bird onto the trunk.
<Nya, I already know I am going to miss this form.> he said somberly before hugging himself.
Arthur just lightly shook his head and let out a sigh. ❝You'll get it back eventually.❞

Hm, this prompt was new, but it seemed easy enough. ❝Kanya, can you try Leaf Storm?❞
<Oh, is it me again?>
❝Yeah but you gotta miss.❞
<What? Why?!>
❝Maybe we're hitting the birds too hard.❞
The cat huffed, putting his paws on his hips, but he supposed it would be fun to use an all-powerful attack for the heck of it. He had never tried this move, but upon mentioning it, he could already feel some kind of hidden knowledge seep into his limbs, bones, and soul. It was steps above Leafage, and with his paws glowing, he took in a deep breath before letting himself become surrounded by gusts of wind. The chosen target was a bunch of clustered vines nearby a Pidgey, so he let out a flurry of leaves by using his paws, like he was throwing playing cards. The blades traveled up high, not losing speed, before striking and cutting the vines and leaving marks on the bark behind it.
He didn't throw many for it to sap a lot of his energy, but Kanya could already tell this move took a toll on him if he used it in full.

Arthur also took note of the toll the move had on Kanya before turning back to Gou, who was waiting for his turn to strike. ❝You're up!❞ he shouted to the fire type. It would be a good idea to try some of the other Pokemon's new moves as well while they had this tier upgraded. ❝Try Facade!❞
Gou nodded, letting himself feel how the move should work, before cloaking himself in an orange aura and locking onto the next Pidgey. This one was further away, so he had to rush in by jumping from one branch to the next, moving with ease and dexterity. The bird couldn't fly and maneuver through the canopy growth fast enough before getting body-slammed by the Monferno, getting pushed to the direction of the ground.
Arthur took note that this move was best used if Gou was suffering a certain status condition, but it seemed like it did a good amount of damage even without it.
