As the glowing bubbles rained down like grenades, the lurking purple Magikarp was torn from the waters of the sulphur spring. It was hurled into the air, fins and whiskers flailing as the enhanced Bubblebeam pummeled its body.
Then it landed on the bank, its energy spent. It gave a weak flop.
Morgana let her breath out with relief, and finally scrubbed at the acid on her arm. The tension went out her body. They were done. The battle was over. She'd caught the fish, and it hadn't broken mid-frame and deleted itself from reality.
It was, however, much, much smaller than expected.
From above, due to the diffracting light through the pool, the fish had appeared enormous. In reality, they had just been viewing it through a magnifying glass made of oil, acid, and a brand-new layer of water. In reality, the Magikarp was no bigger than an action figure. She could hold it in one hand like a goldfish. Was this another glitch?
"What?" Bergamot asked, and then--in dawning glee-- "Ah-hah-hah! Puny weak one, I have obtained thee!"
She squatted down to pick the Magikarp up, holding it aloft. "See your folly! Why, you should--"
Light beamed suddenly from the purple Pokemon and Morgana quickly reached for her Pokeball just in time to hurl it at the miniaturized Gyarados which formed from the spinning pixels, its serpentine body no longer than a feather boa. "Marvelous!" Bergamot exclaimed, wrapping her new Pokemon around herself. "I'll call you Rainbow. This has been a lucrative fishing adventure! Hohoho!"
She flexed her hand, absentmindedly, white spots burned into the skin.

Water Sport was a non-damaging attack, so of course she didn't expect it to have much effect on the enemy swimming below. Still, its HP bar hadn't even blinked. "Bubblebeam," she said, letting out some of the line so that the Magikarp she'd hooked would get a false sense of security before the attack. With Water Sport powering them up, the water-type attack should be unusually effective. Should be. Eyes still slitted, it crossed Morgana's mind that this was another purple Magikarp. Her first Magikarp had been a similar color and had de-spawned upon being weakened, resetting the encounter with a new fish on the line. Here in the Crater, facing another grape-colored monster, there the possibility of another glitch? GLITCH: <[Glitch]56PNUIoZ1d100> 1d100

The gold-crowned fin disappeared beneath the surface again as swiftly as it had come. Acid sizzled against Guillotine from the Splash and the Piplup kicked her feet to rise higher, shaking off the droplets burning against her skin.
Part of the splash hit Morgana as well, who turned pale at the pain. Curiously, she made no move to wipe away the liquid. Her spine straightened like it had been hammered to an iron rod, her knuckles white against the handle of the fishing rod.
It hurts.
She had high pain tolerance. Sometimes the products Chryssa tested caused rashes, or burning, or other pains. It was interesting to see what they would do. That the acid hurt when it landed on her bare skin was not a surprise. There was no adventure in experiencing natural consequences.
Her grip tightened on the rod. The pain focused her. Reminded her where she was. Not in real life-- right here, right now.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Water Sport," she said, all pretentiousness dropping from her voice. It remained light, airy, like she was giving casual instructions on where to place a bomb. "It's strong in the acid. We'll just have to dilute it."
Guillotine spun in the air, summoning a shower of water that she sent crashing down into the rainbow pool. Water crashed across its surface, floating on top of the dense vitriol and creating a protective barrier between the Magikarp and them.

Oh yes. This was happening. Breaking from the deep, indigo center of the pool came a royal purple Magikarp, huge and slow as a sleeping shark. She knew immediately it was rare. Of course it was rare if it was breathing hydrogen sulphate, that wasn't a trait of your average, Common Magikarp like the kind Big Bee was surely fishing up at this moment. "Guillotine! It is time!" Bergamot said, throwing out a hand as the rare Magikarp swam closer and closer, eyeing the (rapidly dissolving) bait. Bergamot hadn't thought to put something acid-resistant on the end of the hook. "When spoke the One, then did the follower leap forth. Fly fast, my sweet Guillotine! Peck, with swift intent!"She was just stringing fantastical-sounding buzzwords together with no real meaning, but the word "Peck" seemed to make it through the translation. Guillotine lifted off the ground, swimming over the surface of the pool. Bergamot's Swimmer ability allowed the water-type to swim through the air, which spared her the pain of wading into the acid just to deliver a physical attack. As the slow-moving giant neared the surface and its fins broke the surface, Guillotine aimed a Peck attack down at the gold-crowned creature.

"That's right," Bergamot said to the audience, "I'm back."
By 'back' she meant back to fishing, not back to the Beta Island Crater. She'd never been here before in her life and it was unpleasant to say the least. Bergamot stood near a deep blue volcanic spring that bubbled at its edges with viritol, creating a gorgeous rainbow effect like a giant, red-rimmed eye. It was lovely, but she was sure even a Swimmer couldn't breathe in that water. Because it wasn't water. It was the chemical that she couldn't spell without looking it up in the dictionary, which she also knew the periodic number for instead for some reason.
Little Johnny took a drink, but he will drink no more For what he thought was H20 Was H2S04.
Ah, she remembered why she remembered. 7th Grade science class. Who could have guessed? And it was called sulfuric acid, by the way. She did look the spelling up. It had been driving her crazy.
The heat came in waves from the black rock all around them, and Morgana shook out her perfectly-dry hair as Guillotine, her Piplup, showered her with a cooling mist to keep her at a comfortable temperature. She was all about catching Magikarp, but she was not about sweating in a game that was, in her opinion, far too eager to show off its immersive temperature control features.
Practicing her monologue, she watched the lure in the pond, waiting for a bite.

Morgana had already passed through the Five Stages of Hilarity upon seeing Manish running towards them with 51 Mudkip on his heels. Now she had moved into Acceptance. "You've done well, my loyal pawn!" she called to manish , laughing smugly behind her hand as the man scrambled behind her for safety. Bergamot was confident she could protect him-- protect all of them! But she was not here to help people, really, she was here to cause unimaginable mental anguish and suffering. "You know, I could just float away on Guillotine," Morgana said pseudo-threateningly, pretending to swirl a glass of wine. The Piplup she was referring to peeked out from behind Manish, eyes narrowed. "What will you people give me if I decide to assist? Your wealth? Your credit card details? Or perhaps a Pokemon will do."Not giving Manish or Big Bee a choice in the matter, Bergamot pointed towards a troupe of Mudkip who had tumbled away from the main group and were yipping and kipping, preparing to launch their mass attack. "Guillotine, Bubblebeam!" she commanded, lifting the little penguin up like she was a plush stuffed sniper rifle and she! Bergamot Riddle! was the sniper. Bubbles fired out from her living penguin bazooka, missing every target with tantalizing ineptitude. The Mudkip proceeded to flow up and over her still-laughing form, burying her beneath their squishy blue bodies.

"Allotta's not coming."You could hear the leer in her voice before you even saw her. Bergamot Gristleborg, the virtual villain, the witch of wideo games, slid out from behind a conveniently placed sand-snowman. There was sand caked on her palms and beneath her fingernails, as if she'd been hard at work constructing something (maybe a sand-snowman to hide behind?) Her high heels sunk into the sand as she crossed the stretch of beach towards Big Bee , gesturing leisurely down the Coastline. "I suppose you're here to catch more Magikarp," she said presumptuously, gesturing towards the sea. "You'd better keep away from the Swarm. I've been tracking it."There was no proof of this, and in fact, Bergamot seemed barely conscious of the battered trail of footprints and torn grass that were the clear signs of the Swarm's passage. "Oh, I was kidding about Allotta. She's probably on her way." The young woman narrowed her eyes. "But she has no idea what she's getting into. The Swarm... it's like nothing you've ever seen." She seemed to gloat over the words, relishing the danger. Without taking her eyes off Big Bee, Bergamot pulled up her UI and placed a PUBLIC QUEST MARKER on their current location. It blinked distractingly on her minimap, as it would for any other players in the area. If the Swarm was half as dangerous as she was pretending, they'd need all the help they could get.

"It liiiiives!"The moment the Magikarp was in the air, Guillotine swooped forward with her beak glowing white, striking it with a brutal PECK attack. Striped with wide lines of white and orange, Bergamot saw the fish fly through the air spectacularly, shining in the dappled sunlight like a piece of artificial bacon. Then it landed near her feet, still conscious. The jungle fish flopped weakly, its tail flattening vines and undergrowth beneath it. "That'll do it," Morgana said smugly, bending down to catch it in a Pokeball. It was certainly tenacious! It wouldn't impress Big Bee in the rarity-catching contest they were definitely having, but she knew such a tenacious fish would be a perfect minion for her evil schemes.

She had a bite immediately. Ha, she thought, tugging triumphantly at the Fishing Rod as whatever was hiding on the other end tugged back. I knew raw meat would do the trick. Jungle Piranhas were famous for their love of flesh and live prey. She wasn't going to send Guillotine in, but a small piece scavenged from the local catgirl's lunch was no problem to replace.
And was very effective.
Guillotine circled the rippling surface of the water like a vulture honing in on a fresh corpse,, treading "water" midair as she waited for the hidden predator to surface. Bergamot could tell from its strength that it wasn't a Feraligatr, at least. "And a one, and a two!" she cried, and jerked the rod sharply up.

Jungle fishing. It was different than ocean fishing because instead of fishing from the end of the dock, where all sorts of glitches and nonsense were likely to occur, Bergamot was fishing from the bank of a beautiful Amazon-esque river. And by beautiful she meant brown, with the occasional Feraligatr rising to the surface to peer at her before lazily dipping beneath again. Not as a real threat, she assumed. Just a warning. Fishing was fine, but Morgana shouldn't try to go swimming. But that was fine, because she had no intention of swimming in tropical rivers or any such nonsense. Bergamot simply wanted to obtain rare Magikarp before her fishing rival Big Bee, who was already trawling the ocean practically dry and leaving nothing promising for her. She baited her hook with a piece of fresh meat and tossed it out into the jungle river, settling back to wait.

After finally catching the gray Magikarp that had spawned after the annoying glitch with the purple one, Bergamot found a comfortable place to make her dramatic last stand against C0D13 and summoned the helpful Porygon from her UI. "Hello, Codie?" she asked with the haughty, distracted air of someone talking while driving. "I had a problem during your new fishing game on the Beta Coastline. My Magikarp suddenly reset at the end of the encounter, so I had to start the entire thing over again. I'd like the first one back, thank you, since I'd been about to catch it before. I'll file the appropriate report with the devs if necessary."While she hadn't thought to take any screenshots of the purple koi before it had suddenly disappeared from existence, there was a clear dispute in her catch log where she'd definitely defeated the Magikarp and it had then re-spawned. Surely its data remained somewhere in the UNOVR logs and could be retrieved by someone in charge.

"Ohohohoho!"
With a high-pitched, triumphant laugh fit for the return of the reigning villainess, Bergamot took hold of the Fishing Rod with her strength renewed and her spiteful vigor refreshed after their visit to the shrine. Guillotine stood poised for battle at her side, fatigue gone and determination in her eyes. This Magikarp could delete itself and re-spawn as many times as it liked-- she wasn't giving up without a fight!
"Now!"
Morgana switched the fishing rod to Guillotine's flippers, leaving her own hands free to fill with empty Pokeballs. She peppered the water with them like she was seasoning a pot of spaghetti, her Piplup pulling franticly at the rod off to the side.

Another feeble hit, and Morgana cut her losses. "Time STOP!"
She paused the game.
No, you couldn't normally do that. Chryssa Glasgow accomplished it by suddenly moving her real-life body so erratically that the WorldScreen threw up a warning popup, graying out the rest of the world around her. Bergamot took the option from the QUiCKLOAD screen. With the fishing rod still wedged in a crack in the dock, she and Guillotine spirited themselves away to the High Tide Shrine for the very first time.

...Morgana didn't want to start posting one-liners, but the situation wasn't looking great in the interest of writing long, well-developed interactions filled with individualized color coding and dialogue.
Guillotine's Pound lacked its... usual sting. The Piplup was already physically exhausted from towing Morgana around in a way that the game clearly hadn't been intended for, and mentally exhausted from all her mental trickery with the previous (purple) Magikarp. Smacking the gray Magikarp was like a tired businessman coming home from a long day of work and slapping a... well, that was just it. He couldn't even figure out what to slap. Guillotine's flipper bonked off of silvery scales, but who knew how much damage it actually did?
Morgana could guess. And she guessed it wasn't much. And you didn't have to have empathy to look at the Piplup and realize it was not in top shape for a battle with much of anything, even a Magikarp.

Morgana was not a particularly careful person, but even she seemed wary of the new fish on the line. Was this one going to cooperate and be caught like a normal Magikarp, or was it going to delete itself the moment it was within catching range?
Honestly, she knew fishing was a new feature, but she'd gone through the game so far blissfully free from the other glitches more "Beta" beta players had experienced.
Morgana was the one who stole Pokémon just as another trainer was about to catch them. She didn't like the game getting turned around on her so easily, especially when she didn't even have anyone to take it out on. Yet.
Guillotine popped her round head out of the water, looking puzzled. Bergamot scoffed, trying to hake off her uncertainty. "Pound, I suppose," she said, gesturing at the new, gray-scaled Magikarp.
