She... did it?
She did it!
Valentine hadn't really expected her plan to work, truth be told, but here she was, out of the Snomager's grasp with her necklace prize still firmly grasped in her hands. And oh, the necklace was even more beautiful once she got a closer look at it, and got to take it outside of the cave and expose it to the natural light outside... such as it was in the Misty Timberland, at least, where fog seemed like less of an atmospheric condition and more of a way of life...
Valentine couldn't help herself; as she toppled back into the rowboat and started paddling frantically back to shore, she burst into loud, exuberant giggles. She was giddy with success, and she was, quite literally, going to make that heard loud and clear.
(note: Valentine got something already, this post is just for funsies~)

That last Rock Throw from the other Trainer's Mudkip (named Skipper, apparently, which was an adorable name and Valentine heartily approved) did, indeed, do the trick. Valentine grinned, but her hands were shaking as the adrenaline in her system tried to find an outlet now that everything was back to normal.
"Nice job! You gonna catch it? It's a Rare Pokemon, so it's probably a good idea to snag one, since they hit extra hard! I've got two Flying-types already, but I'm gonna pick this one up anyway 'cause of that."
Valentine threw her own Poke Ball at the Rufflet, almost lazily. It was true, she didn't really need a Ruflet, but it couldn't hurt to add a Rare to her box, now, could it?

"Alright, back in the saddle again! And see, the Rufflet's still here! Let's see if one more Icy Wind will finish it off, shall we?"
Valentine shivered as Grim unleashed his Icy Wind--she really should have brought a jacket with on this expedition!
"That didn't take too long, now, did it? And now we're all healed up! Better safe than sorry, I figure!"

Were players supposed to visit shrines this often, or was Valentine being overly cautious here?
Ah well, the answer didn't really matter in the end. Better safe than sorry, she figured, especially when whiting out could have such grave consequences. And hey, at least this time she had another Trainer making the trek with her. That was a nice change of pace.
"Heal me up, please, so I can go finish off that Rufflet! I appreciate it!"
She probably didn't really need to speak to the shrine like that, either, but it seemed like a nice gesture. A little kindness never hurt, after all.

That Rock Throw hit harder than the previous one, but the Rufflet still looked raring to go, while Valentine couldn't say the same for herself...
"This is getting pretty dicey, and we're both getting low on hit points here... how about we swing by the nearest shrine before finishing off this battle? I can show you the way if you want!"
Valentine wasn't sure if she could win the battle... which was the scary part. She'd come close to whiting out before, and she didn't want to risk it happening for real. Maybe it wasn't necessary, but better safe than sorry, right?

The sight of the exuberant little girl with an avatar every bit as colorful as Valentine's own was enough to bring a smile to her face.
"Grim, get back in there, try another Icy Wind!"
The girl wasn't wrong, to be fair; Valentine was struggling with this battle. And she didn't mind somebody else getting in on her good fortune of encountering a Rare Pokemon, either. But between the use of an unevolved starter Pokemon that wasn't an obvious type match-up, and the tiny bit of damage done with said starter's attack, Valentine had a sneaking suspicion about the other girl...
"I could use the help, true, but it looks to me like you'll need some help yourself just to get out of here intact! Did you just start out or something? The Steppes can be dangerous, you know!"
Sure, it was ironic, lecturing the stranger about danger when Valentine still was fairly new to the game herself. But at least she had more than just her starter Pokemon to her name now...

A limited-time event, huh? That marker was certainly intriguing, as was the icy rowboat on the edges of a mysterious lake that Valentine found when she followed the marker to its source. The boat didn't seem especially stable at a glance, but rowing it to the far side of the lake proved easier than Valentine had expected from the looks of it, and soon enough she was there, at the mouth of a frost-covered cave, with a serpentine beast of a Snom guarding a multitude of treasures within. (Valentine was very glad that she'd thought to bring a coat with her on her expedition, and equally glad that none of her Pokemon were out of their Poke Balls at the moment, as many of them would react poorly to the ice and snow and frigid cold that now surrounded her.)
Valentine didn't have much of a thought process behind grabbing what she did, truth be told. She knew only enough to know that she didn't have the information needed to truly game the system here. So she grabbed the first sparkly item she found that didn't look too buried beneath the snow--a necklace, as it turned out, one encrusted with a number of colorful gemstones with a chain that might have been silver--and did her best to hike back to the shore before the Snomager could awaken and see what she had done. Run towards the pile, grab the shiny thing, run back to shore. A simple plan, but one she liked the sound of just the same.

Alright, so the Rufflet could pack a punch after all... metaphorically, anyway, you couldn't really punch somebody with a wing, now, could you? Or would it still be a "punch" if they made a "fist" with the end of the wing beforehand? Hard to know...
Regardless, Valentine figured maybe it was time to hedge her bets and add another one of her Pokemon to the mix.
Just seeing the light emitted by Newton was enough to bring a smile to her face, even before the attack. It did help knowing that type match-ups were on her side here, too...
"Newton, quick, hit him with a Thunder Shock!"
The sparks building up as the Tadbulb prepared to attack just helped light up the area even further...

That... went surprisingly well, actually. Though Valentine knew it was far too early to call it a win already. Still, her Sneasel's Icy Wind did hit the enemy Rufflet like a sledgehammer and the Rufflet's attack in return did barely leave a scratch on Grim.
But maybe the Rufflet was saving its energy for the next round...
At any rate, Valentine's attack strategy here was a pretty simple one. Why mess with what worked, after all?
"Hit it with another Icy Wind!"

A bit more rustling, and then Valentine discovered its source, spotting a few stray feathers before taking in the rest of the bird.
A Rufflet? Fascinating! While she had a few Flying-types to her name already, Valentine certainly wasn't opposed to taking in another... and luckily, she had just the thing to help take this little cutie down...
"Grim, hit it hard with your strongest Icy Wind!"
Valentine was left shivering as the Sneasel complied with her order, but she kept smiling just the same.

A rustling noise in the distance... Valentine darted to the source of the sound, eager to find out what was going on, though her initial examination didn't reveal much of interest. She was pretty sure it wasn't just her imagination or the wind blowing through the spires, though. Pretty sure.
One way or another, Valentine was determined to hunt down what wild Pokemon the Steppes had to offer her on this journey...

School was as boring as ever, and Logan couldn't wait to leave the classroom, head home on the bus, and change out of that uptight uniform he always had to wear... but first, that meant riding the bus, which meant putting up with his peers.
They weren't that bad, really. He wasn't bullied or anything. Mostly he was just... ignored, and he could handle being ignored. He was used to it by now, after all... but it was one thing to know that he wasn't the most popular kid in class, and another thing entirely to hear conversations all around him involving what seemed like every kid on the bus except himself, the conversation only screeching to a halt if Logan himself dared to speak up and try to join in the others.

"If we're going to be in that huge battle up in the Steppes, that means we'd better prepare for battle now, while we still can!"
Puff eyed Valentine with an uncertain expression. "And how, exactly, do you intend to do that?"
"By making sure you're in great shape, of course! We don't need to risk matted fur or an empty stomach getting in your way up there!"
Valentine grabbed the Noibat's wing, and at first Puff pulled away, still wary, but a softer touch and the Pokemon stood still as his Trainer brushed his fur.
"Just a few knots in there, that's not too bad, right?"
"Speak for yourself, you're not the one getting them yanked out of your hair!"
"Alright, alright, I'll be gentle."
Valentine was careful but efficient with her brushing, and only a few minutes later she finished up, with a small tuft of purple fur to show for her efforts.
"Thank you for cooperating so well! Here, have a few treats for being such a trooper, okay?"
Puff didn't hesitate to take Valentine up on her offer of treats, but in between bites, the Noibat noted, "I still don't see what any of this has to do with preparing for battle."
"Well, now all that loose fur can't get tugged on by an enemy, right? And you won't have to worry about knots getting in your way at the worst possible time, or extra fur catching on the wind... it's a small step, but every bit helps, right?"
"...sure, whatever you say. And hey, thanks for the treats."

So, the good Professor needed Pokemon from the Steppes now, was it? Well, that seemed as good a reason as any for Valentine to venture out onto the route and see what she could find there. Not that she really needed more Pokemon herself--she already had more Pokemon than team slots to put them in as it was--but if the Professor did, well, that was reason enough to go exploring in this area rather than any other.
Besides, Valentine hadn't been out to the Steppes much, and she was curious what she might be able to find there for herself as well... only one way to find out, after all, right?

Valentine didn't have any big plans for the evening herself. Exploring the Misty Timberland as the sun set had been as far as her planning had gone... and it had worked out well enough, honestly, she had definitely appreciated the special beauty of the sunset peeking out from between the trees and through the fog, but now she was in the middle of the forest and it was dark out and she wasn't quite sure what to do with herself. She had her Tadbulb out, which helped a little with the light situation, but she was still more or less flying blind and trying desperately to retrace her steps in the darkness.
Thankfully, when she spotted a light in the distance and decided to follow it, the light proved not to be a wild Pokemon intent on attacking her or a will-o-the-wisp made to lead her astray, but a fellow Trainer whose Pokemon had just lit a campfire.
"Hello there!" Valentine said, waving energetically as she approached the other Trainer, the combination of light from Newton floating by her side and the campfire burning in front of them leading to some strange shadows flitting to and fro amidst the mist. "Building a campfire, huh? Sounds nice to me, it's getting a little cold out..."
Honestly, Valentine hadn't noticed the cold as much as the darkness, but right as she spoke a gust of wind came out of nowhere, and Valentine was left shivering.
"Case in point, heh."
