Valentine liked the Tower of Cats, even if it was old news by now, doubly so even. Val liked cats, liked how they could be affectionate but you still had to work for their love to some extent, in a way that made it feel like it was worth all the more for it. Plus, they still had a couple cats of their own from previous iterations of the Tower that they needed to make some use of, and what better place to do that than the Tower of Cats itself? After all, there was something to be said for bringing things full circle, remembering what they meant to you in the first place...
All this was beside the point, of course. In game, all that really mattered was that the Tower of Cats meant more Bytes and more free Pokemon, and both of those sounded good to Valentine right about now, especially since the whole college search thing had been getting in the way of Logan's Pokemon time. (The nerve of real life, interfering with Pokemon! How dare it! ...and yet, Logan still felt guilty for every moment spent playing UNOVR instead of narrowing down his list of colleges further or doing more research into the ones that seemed like serious contenders for applications next year...)
And luckily, Valentine had a Pokemon that could knock this prompt out without so much as blinking an eye.
"Sphinx, use... uh..." It didn't really matter, mechanically, what move the Espeon used. Valentine knew that, Logan knew that. And yet, there was still a moment of hesitation before they picked an attack and went with it. "Tackle! Hit 'em with your strongest Tackle, Sphinx!"
The Espeon was quick to oblige, slamming into the nearest other cat Pokemon without hesitation or mercy.
People said it was a dog eat dog world, but right about now, it seemed more like a cat eat cat world...

Logan did like his fair share of music, but he wasn't really the sort to have strong feelings about it. Mostly he listened to whatever his parents or his chauffeur or whoever happened to have on in the car, which was usually a mix of classic rock and pop songs. But neither of those felt exactly right for the tone he wanted to set here, especially when keeping in mind that he was submitting them not as himself, exactly, but as Valentine.
(Well, maybe Valentine would go for some of those bubblegum-sweet pop songs. But Logan wasn't quite willing to volunteer himself publicly as the sort who listened to that sort of thing. Even if anyone who said Taylor Swift didn't have a good voice was clearly lying.)
So, what would fit? It'd feel weird recommending dad music to the world, but nominating the latest pop hit didn't feel right either. Plus, Ostellia didn't feel that mainstream to begin with. It'd need something different, something you didn't hear every day...
And so, Logan got an idea and raced to enter it into the chat before he second-guessed himself or lost his nerve.
I'm nominating Darude Sandstorm. Or Sandstorm, by Darude, technically. It's upbeat, it's a banger, no lyrics to distract you from what you're doing... and c'mon, who wouldn't get a kick out of coming across this while exploring the desert, fitting title and all?

Logan hadn't really expected someone from Hydance to be there with stamps when he was about to leave UNOVRCon, but sure enough, the stamp booth was there, and Logan took the offered STAMP and smiled and tried to sort through his thoughts.
His suitcase was heavier than it had been on the way there, but he'd assumed that that would be the case, had packed only the essentials on the way in to prepare for just such an eventuality. A few larger items were being shipped back home, and that... hadn't been part of the plan, exactly, but it wasn't a problem either. He had plenty of space to spare back home, and it wasn't like the money was an issue, after all.
But... the con hype was starting to wear off, and Logan was tired, and starting to realize how much time, effort, and money he had spent on this little expedition. Was it worth it? All for some video game that he refused to let anybody else from back home ("from real life", he thought, as if the convention wasn't, as if none of the people he'd met back there had been real people going about their own lives just the same as Logan himself) know that he played it in the first place.
He had fun. That was what mattered, right? That he'd had fun at the time?
But if that was the case, why did he suddenly been so burned out?

Logan was... more than a little self-conscious about his cosplay of Dr. Bunya, truth be told.
It wasn't just that it was crossplaying, mind, though that was part of it. But part of it was just... Logan still associated dressing up as a character from some game or show or whatever with Halloween costumes, with little kid stuff. It wasn't what adults did. It wasn't what serious people did, the kind who would go far in life, and he did want to be that kind of person down the road, really.
But Logan figured there was no better way to shake off that feeling than to go to the Artist's Corner, grab a quick STAMP, and see all the other people cosplaying there, too. Not only would he be among like-minded souls, but hey, his costume couldn't be the worst of the bunch, could it?
And no, no it wasn't... but that only helped a bit, truth be told. Because his costume was far from the best of the bunch, too. For every "cosplay" that was clearly thrown together with items the person had already owned in their costume, there was a cosplay that was hand-sewn, the product of a true labor of love, hours of time and effort poured into a single outfit to be shown off here.
That wasn't Logan here, either. He'd bought the items for his Bunya costume as they were, with the lack of customization required being part of what had drawn him to the character in the first place. The outfit could look like regular street clothes at a glance, which was nice for fitting in everywhere else, but here it just made him feel like an amateur.
Too nerdy for regular life, too regular for nerd life... Logan knew the feeling all too well, but he detested it just the same.

Oh good, Logan wasn't the only one getting here at the eleventh hour, or who looked a bit confused about what exactly was going on here; he saw at least one other person in the area who looked every bit as confused as Logan felt, and Logan felt a strange sense of superiority as he was able to pull up his own version of the UNOVRCon a bit quicker than the other person--the other player--had pulled up his before.
Maybe if he had been in the Dream Kingdom Lounge earlier... but Logan felt self-conscious enough crossplaying as Bunya, and adding his very pink and feminine user avatar to the mix had felt like a bridge too far for him, before he's heard that there was some excitement involved, and maybe even some in-game loot to boot.
Was he too late to get in on the action? Well, even if he was, he'd get a STAMP out of the deal at least, thanks to a helpful if tired-looking Hydance employee at the stamp booth nearby. It was better than nothing, at the very least. And hey, sometimes with this sort of thing, every last bit helped... even from a player who perpetually felt like he was running one step behind...

Logan had never been a huge ClanWar fan, but he'd been into it a decent amount, and he knew some folks who were really obsessed with the game, knew all the ins and outs of it, that sort of thing. He was here, so might as well take advantage of it and find out what this big new announcement was so he could report back to the folks at home, right? Make his friends jealous. And besides, he had to have something to talk about from his big trip out West, right?
It was still weird, though, standing around waiting for the event to start... he could take a seat, but standing at least let him walk around, which was a better way of letting out that anxious energy than most of the others Logan could think of right now...
Oh yeah, they had STAMPS at the event stages, right? That was something he could do while he waited! Might as well get one step closer to getting that nice UNOVR loot, right?
Logan went up to the staff member at the side with the little stamp books and opened his own stamp book up to get the next stamp for his collection... then felt a bit awkward about it. The other stamp collection booths he'd seen had been pretty busy, with lines that went from kinda long to super long, but he'd been able to just step right up and grab his here.
Was that because everybody else in here just did ClanWars and not UNOVR? Was he the weird one for being a UNOVR player too? Did they all come to the con just for this one announcement? God, and here he was dressed as Dr. Bunya, he must seem like such a dork to them all...
Logan looked back at the crowd and gave a sheepish smile to nobody in particular as he put his stamp book away, suddenly fervently wishing that he'd come here with somebody else who got it, rather than perpetually feeling like he was on the outskirts of it all...

Logan knew he was taking a plunge in a couple ways by coming to this con in person.
Not, like, financially. His parents had that much covered. He could buy to his heart's content, as much as he could fit in his bedroom anyway, and maybe if he asked nicely he could fit a few things into the guest room or one of the other rooms they didn't use much. That wasn't the issue.
But, well, he was in a weird spot where he tried not to mix UNOVR and real life much, and also where his avatar wasn't completely unknown (he thought, he hoped--hey, Valentine had done that one raid, right? That had to be something! Even if he didn't remember much in the way of details...) but definitely wasn't one of the big name players either, and going to the con in person might just complicate all that even further.
At least his outfit was sensible enough, because here in VR, he was still wearing it. Logan was glad he hadn't gone with his first thought of cosplaying as his avatar--the pink wig was wild enough, but the more he examined her outfit, the more he realized that it was very girly and showing way more of her body than he would ever want to do in person. But he was still crossplaying, even if someone who didn't know the game lore (but who would that be at UNOVRCON?) wouldn't be able to tell. Hey, it wasn't Logan's fault that this game had like, five NPCs! Cygnus' outfit was way too complicated, he didn't think he could pull off the sheer chad-y vibes of Chadwick... the rival, maybe, but Logan didn't know how you'd get those star prints onto clothes without either doing a really sloppy job outright painting it or just like, hiring someone, which felt weird.
So, in UNOVRCON in reality and on the ocean back in VR, Logan was dressed like Dr. Bunya instead, and feeling a little awkward about it.
(He'd come to the Arcade just for the STAMP initially, but hey, while he was working on free swag for himself, why not try to get some free swag for his character while he was at it? But Logan didn't trust his cosplay outfit to be quite sturdy enough for that knock-off Temple Run business. The monocle kept falling off as it was, and the stockings kept creeping back down his legs...)
So. Sandwiches, huh? Logan wasn't an expert on those, in real life or in Pokemon. (Did they even have those in the regular games? Were those, like, an item at some point? Or did the devs just make that up entirely?)
But as he steered his boat onto the island and examined the trees nearby, upon hearing a nearby player's shout for help, Logan realized one thing he did know a fair bit about... or used to, anyway.
How long ago was it since he'd spent hours on end mixing Pokeblocks in Pokemon Emerald, trying to get just the right contest stats...
"The pink ones are sweet! So that should be good, right? Probably better than the red ones, those are spicy, I think... and dry, maybe? I never did know what 'dry' was supposed to taste like, but I'm guessing it's an acquired taste at best..."
Funny how the old knowledge came flooding back like that, the moment he needed it again. It was like he was eight years old again, hunched over his translucent Game Boy Advance, hoping that this Pokeblock would be enough to make his Pokemon a contest Champion...
Even in the more sedate of the two minigames, Logan didn't trust his outfit to be up for much activity, so he shook the nearby trees rather than trying to climb them. Some of the pink and red berries fell down, but also a twisty blue one, and while it looked familiar Logan couldn't remember what it was supposed to taste like, or its name for that matter...
"I mean, do we know what kind of thing the, uh, Splashmother likes in the first place? We don't, right? So, uh, might as well play it safe, I assume?"
Logan was used to playing it safe, at least. He was out of his comfort zone enough as it was here.

Valentine... couldn't remember how she had gotten this Bagon, exactly. Something about the Dream World? Something about that raid she had done, with- with-
The details eluded her mind, at least in waking hours.
But the Bagon was there, just the same, and it made Valentine feel a little uneasy every time she stumbled upon the Pokemon again and felt like there was some story there, something she couldn't quite remember anymore. It wasn't any fault of the Pokemon, of course, and she wanted it to get a good home in the end, but... but perhaps that good home wasn't going to be with her.
And she did need a Fire-type still, so when Valentine saw a trade request with a Scorbunny, she shrugged and went for it. Scorbunny was cute, and Rare, which would be nice. Bagon was only Uncommon, so she was getting the better end of the deal, really. But Dragon-types always did seem to be desired in the games, so it was worth a shot. If Puff hadn't had that covered already, even her vague unease might not stop Valentine from keeping her newfound Bagon.
But as it was, Valentine let out a sigh that was half relief, half guilt as she saw the trade request go through.

Valentine's box was filling up fast, but she was finding it hard to care when there were so many cute Pokemon out there to snag! Sure, she had a few cats already, but the ones she didn't have were adorable, too, so how could she pass up the chance at some more? A few Bytes spent on box slots would be well worth the cost if it meant giving her the opportunity to bond with more potential Pokemon friends.
First, though, she had to do the battling side of things... at least that was easy enough here in the Tower of Cats, where she was guaranteed to not need more than one attack to finish off her opponent, so long as she used the right one.
And Valentine knew just what attack to use this time around.
"Nova, hit 'em with your Shadow Sneak!"
In the regular Pokemon games, Shadow Sneak wouldn't even hit an enemy Patrat... but UNOVR wasn't a regular Pokemon game, not by any stretch of the imagination, and here, the attack was enough to knock down the wild Patrat in a single move.
Nova, for her part, flitted around the Tower happily, a few stray feathers falling to the ground as she flew this way and that way, clearly satisfied with her own battling prowess.

Valentine didn't hesitate to accept the stranger's trade request, and why would she? She had put the Espeon up for trading, after all, since it was her second of the species. Espeon was a neat species, but she certainly didn't need two of them to her name!
So the stranger was offering a Yanma... Valentine didn't have one of those. Neat little guys, they were, but not something she had thought to seek out proactively. Maybe she could find some use for it down the road. It was more promising than a duplicate of a Pokemon she already had, at any rate. Hopefully the stranger would be just as happy with their Espeon as Valentine was with her new Yanma friend!

"Right! Uh..."
Valentine took a large step towards the tall grass, not quite sure where she should be focusing her attention in the meantime--on her conversation partner? On the tall grass itself, and whatever was about to pop out of it? On MOM (NPC) suddenly running their way?
As it turned out, though, the point was moot, because whatever she had been focusing on quickly lost focus once QUACXEE popped up seemingly out of nowhere to block her path.
"Whoa there! Were you about to step into the Tall Grass?"
QUACXEE's voice was robotic and almost monotone despite the emotional intent behind its words, and in a way that could have been soothing, but somehow it just annoyed Valentine even more. Like, it was bad enough being lectured by an actual person, but being lectured by a robot felt even worse.
"Wild Pokemon can be found in the Tall Grass! Before you head in there, you need to learn how to catch Pokemon!"
"I already know, thanks." Valentine muttered under her breath, turning towards her tutorial partner and sharing an exaggerated eye roll. This was going to be... interesting.

Valentine had a few different Pokemon with slicing moves herself. (What did that say about her, that she had a number of Pokemon willing to use their sharp and pointy bits to attack their enemies if need be? Something? Anything?) After seeing Jinx bombard an enemy Patrat with razor-sharp leaves from a silky-smooth Cottonee, though, Valentine knew who she wanted to choose this time around.
And Nova was so in tune with her owner that Valentine didn't even need to voice her command to get the Rowlet to act. All it took was looking over at the small bird Pokemon and shooting her a nod and a wink, and the Pokemon leapt into action quickly enough.
Within a matter of seconds, the Cottonee's leaves weren't the only razor-sharp leaves flying around the Tower, as Nova was quick to add her own cutting barrage to the mix. As with Jinx's attack earlier, the enemy Patrat was cut into pieces. Good thing this game's animation tended towards the cutesy and less-detailed side, because in another type of game, slicing up a rodent like that could lead to the kind of gore that Valentine shuddered to even think about!
Soon enough, the Patrat faded away, leaving them with... a floor absolutely covered in pointy leaves. Oops. Hopefully nobody was going barefoot around here...

"Support does make sense, I suppose... I'm still figuring my final team out, but my Rowlet's a Tank, my Paldean Wooper's a Sweeper, and my Noibat's Support... nice and even, at least for now."
Hearing the other woman describe her team, though, a pattern became clear to Valentine, and she couldn't help but comment on it.
"You're a fan of Poison-types, then, I take it?" Three out of four mentioned seemed like a clear enough pattern to Valentine, at least. She wouldn't have guessed that her fellow Flabebe-hatcher would be a Poison-type fan, but then, it took all kinds... and she wasn't opposed to Poison-types, at any rate. Glimmet was a pretty nifty Pokemon; Valentine wouldn't mind having one of those herself down the line. And Venonat was always nice, and of course her Paldean Wooper was part Poison-type too...

It was an... odd message, certainly, but the point was clear enough. And Fomantis was a neat little guy, even if Valentine had a mental block about them not actually being Bug-types. Maybe actually using one of them would help her along with that mental block. It was worth a shot, right?
And she did have that Espeon that she wasn't using, and probably wouldn't use now that she had Lady Wynne to take care of all her Psychic-type Pokemon needs... and a few others she could probably spare as well, but Espeon seemed the most straightforward to part with.
Valentine was careful with her typing, at least.
Would you be interested in an Espeon for that Fomantis of yours? I've got one to spare!

Valentine had never been a fan of construction. Sure, when it needed to be done it needed to be done, but it was just so mundane and physical. Just moving stuff around and running loud heavy machinery and creating a big mess in the process before having to eventually clean it all up. Ugh.
At least the construction here promised to be temporary enough... but just being around the Pidgey at work was enough to give her a headache.
And yet, given the prompt at hand, all Valentine could do was add to the noise...
"Puff, shoot them a Supersonic!"
The Noibat obliged as Valentine covered her ears, though she knew the attack couldn't harm her as such... but still, better to hear less of the noise if she could, right? But if she had to feel confused and out-of-sorts while making her way through the Tower, well, the least she could do was repay the favor...
