...okay, so switching to Razor Leaf had clearly been a mistake there. The Squirtle was still struggling, but it wasn't out of the fight just yet.
But did that mean that Nova needed to switch back to Leaf Blade, or were there other attacks that would fit the bill just as well? Had Razor Leaf itself been the problem, or was it just a fluke?
Valentine decided not to risk it, and hedged her bets by choosing what seemed like the safe option, already proven once in this battle.
"One more Leaf Blade, Nova! You can do it!"
A little extra encouragement never hurt, right?

Not quite a one-hit KO, but close. The Squirtle was clearly ailing, and it hurt Valentine just to watch it struggling, even though she knew that, at least for now, it was her opponent in the game, her enemy of choice. At least she would soon be able to put the thing out of its misery.
"Razor Leaf this time!"
Still a Grass-type attack, but Valentine felt like shaking it up, at least a little bit.

Somehow Valentine hadn't even considered getting a Squirtle. Her mind had been on all sorts of other Water-types, but she had forgotten about the original water starter... and it was even cuter than she remembered, too! What a nice little guy!
...a nice little guy that she had to have one of her Pokemon beat up now, of course. Whoops.
"Nova, hit him with your Leaf Blade!"
It was a strong attack, and super effective to boot. Maybe she could make the Squirtle's felling a quick one at least...

Was that the sound of a wild Pokemon nearby, or just the waves splashing to and fro? Or maybe it was both, maybe it was a wild Pokemon making those errant waves... only one way to find out!
...which meant wading through the water, getting her clothes soaked, and a bit of salt water ended up in Valentine's mouth in the process. Ick. But hey, it'd all be worth it when that wild Pokemon appeared, right?
...there had to be a good place to dry out her clothes somewhere... wearing soggy clothes was the worst.

This area lived up to its name. It really was a beautiful coastline.
Not that Valentine had come there just for the nice scenery, but it certainly didn't hurt to have something pretty to look at while hunting wild Pokemon, right?
And everything here was Water-type, as far as she knew, so that would help her cover some more ground when it came to type coverage... it was just a matter of seeing what would pop up this time around.

The Mew was fainted, but the Tower was still there, and the prompts just kept on coming...
And Valentine didn't hesitate to get in one last attack.
"Grim? We need a slicing move... give them your best Slash."
The Weavile smiled, or perhaps bared his teeth, as he sliced the nearest Patrat to bits accordingly. But Valentine just kept looking at the fallen Mew... such a thing of beauty, even fainted as it was...

"Oh! Um, maybe?" Valentine blushed a little bit at the assumption, though that was definitely Logan's own feelings entering the game there rather than something befitting his character. "It does seem nice, but there's a lot of classes out there that seem nice, so it's hard to choose... plus, I do like Gardener, and I'm nowhere near maxing it out yet, so I'd want to do that before I get any other class I think..."
Valentine's rambling was interrupted only by the egg rocking right out of her hands, rolling a couple feet away before coming to a rest on the ground. Valentine scrambled to get the egg back and checked it for any signs of injury--that crack hadn't been there before, had it? Did the fall hurt it? Or--no, the crack was getting bigger now, even as Valentine held it safely in her hand...

In real life, Logan was a little awkward around dogs, but that was just a combination of him being a little awkward in general and not having a ton of experience with living with and caring for dogs. Would letting them jump on him be a good thing, or would that be setting a bad example? Would it be okay if he spoke loudly, or would that scare the dog? Should he speak to the dog the high-pitched, cutesy one otherwise reserved only for babies, or would that be infantilizing a full-grown animal? It was hard to know, especially as the answers seemed to change from dog to dog and from owner to owner.
In UNOVR, where the dogs in question were just fancy bits of code and didn't really have feelings, much as it was fun to pretend that they did, that awkwardness went right out the window, and Valentine embraced the strange Greavard as he jumped on her, muttering sweet nothings until the dog sat back down.
"Oh, big cute doggie, sweet doggie... does your owner- er, Trainer know you're over here with me?" Valentine waved at the nearest player, though she wasn't sure that he was the Greavard's Trainer just yet. "Hello there! Is this your dog I've got here with me?"
Valentine didn't even notice it herself, as her train of thought was now well and truly occupied with dog-related thoughts, but the bouquet that had been occupying her hands only moments ago fell to the ground when she embraced the dog Pokemon, sending even more petals into the air before hitting the ground in just the right place to be trampled underfoot when the Greavard's front paws returned to the ground.

Valentine was fascinated by the well, by the colorful fish that dwelt within its depths, by the sign saying not to wish for anything and the Quest prompt that seemed to rather suggest wishing anyway. Was this going to be some sort of mad genie thing, where her exact words would be examined for any sign of a loophole, granting her wish but only in the most malicious way possible?
That seemed like an uncharitable assumption, though. The well looked nice enough, though admittedly Valentine wasn't sure what an evil wishing well would even look like. Besides, even if she did try to phrase her wish beyond any misinterpretation whatsoever... she would probably fail. She'd never been the best at that sort of thinking, in trying to survive those sorts of thought experiments. If the well was going to make a fool of her, well, then she would let it, because that would say more about it than it would about her.
Plus, she didn't have anything that nice and concrete to wish for. A million Bytes? That'd just feel like cheating, like speeding her way into seeming more accomplished in the game than she actually was. A rare Pokemon? Better, perhaps, but there were so many to choose from, and she'd either have to pick a specific one out of the untold possibilities out there or accept that what she got was up to the well as much as up to her own choice.
Actually, that sounded kind of nice. She was already trusting the well in breaking that "no wishing" rule and making a wish anyway. Why not just go for it even further? Why not trust the well to pick out something nice for her?
"I wish... for something that you think will make me happy. Something that will be fun and useful and just... good for me, overall." A smile broke out on Valentine's face as she added: "I'm trusting your judgment on this one, old well. I hope you don't make me regret it."

Sinnoh Pokemon, huh? Good thing Valentine had evolved Grim on a whim (heh, that rhymed!) not long ago...
And hey, he even had a type advantage against Mew! Though that probably didn't make much of a difference, really, especially as Grim would be directly attacking a Patrat and only doing damage to Mew by proxy...
"Grim, use Assurance!"
The actual effect of the move didn't fit that well, but the name sounded right, at least. She liked the sound of being assured to hit here. And Grim looked happy to try out a new move, too, the Weavile smiling broadly... or maybe he was just baring his teeth at his opponent? That would explain why the Patrat looked so scared...

Was it a bit silly, buying flowers in a video game when they had no special effects (as far as Valentine knew, anyway) and she was already a class that grew plants naturally? Probably.
But that NPC Hank seemed like a sweetheart, and he really did have some gorgeous flowers for sale, and that had to be some special deal she'd gotten on that bouquet of daisies, white carnations, and lilacs. Why not take advantage of a good deal when she found one?
Valentine wasn't quite sure what to... do with the bouquet once she had it, though. It was a bit big to just carry around everywhere, and she felt like she was practically a living advertisement for that NPC's flower shop now, shedding petals everywhere. Maybe that's what he had intended. Maybe that was why she had gotten such a good deal...

Valentine hadn't been sure about the basketball event--she wasn't really much for sports, truth be told (that was one of the things in everyday life that Logan came here to avoid, after all)--but Grim's eyes had lit up upon hearing that the basketball team was holding try-outs, and who was she to deny the Weavile a bit of fun?
"Before you get started, you need to get dressed for the part, Grim! Pretty sure they have a rule against bare feet on the basketball court, after all!"
A Gothita umpire spoke up to clarify that it only mattered if the bare feet in question were dirty, excessively sweaty, or otherwise tracking in grime, but too late. Valentine had already gotten out the little booties she had bought for Grim, and she wasn't going to be stopped by a little thing like them not being necessary. Plus, what if the Weavile ended up working up a sweat during practice? Better safe than sorry!
"These sneakers are made for athletes, so maybe they'll help you become one! It's worth a shot, at least, right?"
The Weavile didn't look especially convinced by Valentine's argument, and he made a face as she shoved his feet into the sneakers, but he at least tolerated wearing them, so it could have been worse, all things considered.
"Really, Grim, I believe in you here, and not just because I can tell you're into this sport, though that sure helps. But really, you were practically made for basketball, all tall and skinny like you are! And now that you've evolved, you're even stronger and faster and taller than before! Get some practice in, and I'm sure you'll blow them all away! Now, go show the Bandanas scouts what you're made of!"
Grim didn't have to be told twice, shooting Valentine a quick nod before running onto the court after his owner's pep talk. And he did seem to be something of a natural at the sport. He could dribble! He could shoot! He could... pop the ball with one of his claws, apparently? Oh dear, that wasn't a good ability to have... and after the ball popped, Grim just stared at it, deflated on the floor, for a long minute...
Valentine didn't hesitate to take the chance to go cheer up her Pokemon.
"Tough break there! I'll admit, I didn't see that one coming. But having claws doesn't mean you can't play basketball, not even close! Now, I can see two solutions here. Either I go get you some cute little gloves to match those adorable sneakers you have on-"
Grim snarled at the idea, baring his teeth for all to see. Valentine shuddered a little, but she didn't let it stop her, though her speech after the snarl was a bit faster and more high-pitched.
"Or you can learn to hold your hands so you don't pop the basketball! I'm guessing we're going with option number two here!"
Grim nodded and looked back up at Valentine.
"So, uh, it's just the tips of your claws that are sharp enough to do that, right? So you just need to learn to play with the rest of your paw. Try to keep the ball close to your palm when you're dribbling--like this, kind of?"
Valentine's display, with the last knuckle of each fingertip pointed out to vaguely resemble claws, probably wasn't as good as she thought, but it was enough for Grim to get the idea, at least.
"Now you try?"
The Weavile was hesitant, but he took the ball, dribbling it cautiously a few times before darting across the court at his usual speed once more.
"There you go! Now, if that's not a Bandana team member waiting to happen, well, I don't know what is!"
