Valentine's heart was racing now, and not just because Nova had startled her almost as much as the enemy Noibat. This was exciting! A real battle with her very own Pokemon!
"Alright, Nova, now show her who's the best bird Pokemon out there with a ferocious Peck!" Valentine's voice was probably a little loud for the nighttime setting, but she couldn't help it, she was just so excited!
Even in the dim light, it was fun watching the two Flying-types flit about in the air, from what little she could see out of the shadows...

It was a hit! Not the strongest of hits, despite the weather seeming to lend itself to shadow-y moves, but Valentine wasn't complaining, especially since the Noibat's return hit wasn't all that bad either. It was certainly a step in the right direction!
"Alright, Nova, how about an Astonish now?"
Nova nodded before... wandering off, or so it seemed. The darkness provided plenty of cover for the small bird Pokemon, and the wild Noibat looked every bit as bewildered by its foe's appearance as Valentine herself felt. Only after a minute had gone by with the Rowlet not revealing herself did the Rowlet pop out from behind a tree, startling her opponent.
(Nova at 290 HP-- lost 10 HP from the auto-hit back)

It was still hard to make out details in the darkness, but lights from the settlement illuminated a purple blur, with wings flitting here and there, rustling the grass below...
A Noibat? Oh, those were nice! Sure, she already had Nova as a Flying-type, but per the old saying, birds of a feather flock together, right? (Wait, do Noibats even have feathers?) And she did plan on turning Nova into a big strong Decidueye one day, and she would lose the Flying typing then...
...though either way, Nova would be weak to that very same Flying typing, so she had to think before proceeding.
"Nova, use Shadow Sneak!"
On a night as filled with shadows as tonight, that had to be extra strong, right? Valentine could hope, anyway... and regardless, the sight of Nova prowling towards the unsuspecting Noibat was a wonderful one, regardless of how hard the move itself hit...

Was that the sound of something rustling that Valentine heard just now, or was that just her imagination, or the wind playing tricks on her?
...well, it wasn't terribly windy, so it shouldn't be that last one. But it wasn't as if she was the only one out here in the settlement, so maybe somebody else had decided to take a nighttime walk, even on this dark and gloomy night...
...or it was a wild Pokemon, either one that had learned to coexist with the outpost that had grown up around then or one that had lost its way from one of the nearby routes. Or, for that matter, a not-wild Pokemon that had gotten away from their owner... so many possibilities!
"Hello?" Valentine wasn't really expecting a response, not really, but the way her voice echoed into the distance before being lost to the abyss was still a little eerie to her ears. "Is somebody out there?"
No response still, but that rustling just seemed to grow louder by the minute...

It was dark out as Valentine walked aimlessly near the edge of the settlement, and not just because the sun had set hours ago, either. It was a new moon on this night, meaning that none of the moonlight that otherwise would have worked its way through clouds and tree branches to stream back down was there to light the way. Valentine remembered hearing vaguely that new moons were supposed to be a time of new beginnings, which fit her well enough as she was just starting her own Pokemon adventure... but as Valentine took step after careful step through the darkness, she shivered a little, trying to remember the way back to her nice soft bed, grateful that she hadn't pushed herself into exploring a new route just before sun set.
She did need to explore other areas one of these days, though. Valentine knew she couldn't just stay by her mother's side forever--she'd done that enough already, thanks! And while she had Nova by her side now, soon enough she would have to find more Pokemon to befriend, more teammates to help her explore the world around her.
Valentine let out a long yawn and considered her next steps--metaphorically as well as literally--carefully. Maybe she should just call it a night... but she wasn't tired in the slightest, not tonight, not when she was finally free to roam with a Pokemon by her side. If only it weren't so dark out...

"So I'm still kind of new to... all this... but I know there's a lot to explore in this world, even right here in our backyard! Want to go berry hunting, Nova?
"Sounds like a plan!"
Valentine and Nova worked together to scout out a bit of forest near the Professor's Lab. It was a bit of a cool day, and Valentine had to stop herself from shivering with some of the heavier breezes, but the good news was that all that wind moving the trees around made it easy to find berries that had dropped on the ground. Before long, she'd grabbed a handful of berries and went to check on Nova's progress.
For a brief moment, Valentine didn't see the Rowlet, and her mind filled with all sorts of things that might have unfolded while she had been looking elsewhere... but then the bird Pokemon let out a quick "Over here!, and Valentine craned her neck to find Nova sitting on a tree branch well above her head.
"Did you find any berries up there, little one?"
"A couple, yeah." Nova flitted down and revealed a couple of berries that were tucked away under her wing, leaving her feathers lightly stained with colorful berry juices.
However, a closer look at the Rowlet's body, and particularly her face, made it clear that her wing wasn't the only area that had been stained with berry juices...
"...Nova, did you eat most of the berries you found?"
"What? No, of course not!"
Valentine just stared back at Nova.
"I mean... yeah, kind of. Is that a problem?"
Valentine let out a brief snort of amusement. "Not a real problem, no, I suppose not. But let me know next time you're feeling peckish, and I'll give you some better treats than that, alright? And don't lie to me, either. We've got to trust each other, you and I, you know? We've got to work together, if we're gonna be the best there ever was!"
"Yeah, you're right." Nova nodded, a bit ashamedly, before nonchalantly licking some of the berry juice off of her wing.

Baby Pokemon, huh? That promised to be cute, and Valentine was totally there for cute Pokemon, after all! She already had one under her belt now, after her visit to Professor Ash, but there was no reason to stop there, not when there was a whole world of Pokemon to be discovered out there! "Are you ready to find a new friend, Nova?" Valentine's voice was probably a bit overly chipper, a bit louder than it needed to be, but she didn't much care. "Sure, why not? Having another Pokemon to work with sounds nice!"So Valentine started her search, looking up and down, near and far, for any sight of a Pokemon egg or baby Pokemon on the loose... there were a couple of others doing the same thing, but they already knew each other, and- (Logan was afraid of talking to anybody besides his new Rowlet, afraid of making a misstep when he opened his mouth-) -Valentine didn't want to interrupt their conversation, especially since it sounded like the two that were talking knew each other already, while both were strangers to her. But hey, it was nice not to be alone, right? If anything bad happened, they'd be able to rely on each other and work together to fix things, wouldn't they? Not that anything bad would happen, of course. That's not what the Rookery was about... Valentine was pretty sure about that... |

A Rowlet, huh? Valentine hadn't been expecting that... but then she wasn't really sure what she had been expecting.
Valentine wasted no time in letting the owl Pokemon out of the Poke Ball. The Rowlet was female, which Valentine definitely hadn't been expecting--the odds were against that, right? Maybe it was a good sign. Maybe it was all meant to be.
At any rate, just watching the Grass-type waddle around the lab was enough to bring a smile to her face.
"Hey there, little Rowlet!"
The Rowlet looked up immediately and took a few steps towards Valentine; Valentine, for her part, crouched down so she was closer to the Pokemon's own eye level.
"You're coming with me on a big adventure! Exciting, right?"
"Yeah!"
Valentine startled a bit at that, though logically she shouldn't have--it was one thing to know that Pokemon spoke, and another to actually hear one speak, apparently. That was her very own Rowlet, talking back to her! How cool was that?
Valentine chuckled a little before replying. "I'm glad you agree! Now, I want to give you a nickname... how about Nova? It means new, and this is all new to me, after all. Plus it reminds me of the stars, and I like that--and I can call you my little super Nova! Because I'm sure you are super!"
Nova giggled a little at that, but the giggling soon gave way to nodding. "Sounds good to me! I'm looking forward to getting out there and checking out the world around us!"
Valentine stood up and stretched her arms, a wide grin forming on her face. "You and me both, Nova! You and me both..."

These were interesting questions the Professor had to ask. Weighty ones. Well, the first one was weighty, anyway. Valentine hadn't gone into this expecting to have to think this much.
"Advice for my younger self... hmm..." Valentine had to think about that one for a moment. "I guess just, don't stress that much, or something? It'll all work out. Yeah, that seems like good advice. Though I imagine I'll have better advice down the road--after all, my adventure's just getting started!"
"Then, uh, studying for a test... I mean, I'd make sure to read the textbook and my notes from class and all. Assuming it's that kind of test, anyway. But really, I've always found studying easier with friends! Get together some flashcards and pool your notes and turn that studying into a party!"
(Logan, for his part, had never actually tried studying like that, but it sounded nice enough.)
"And, about the sandwich..." Valentine's cheeks turned almost as pink as her hair as she weighed her words carefully. "I think it depends? I mean, there's a difference between dropping it on a tile floor that's just been cleaned and dropping it in, like, a litterbox. And also how long it's been, though there's probably no saving that litterbox one, really. But sometimes they can still be salvaged. Especially if it's a really good sandwich."
Oh man that sounded awkward. Was she going to end up with a Pokemon as ditzy as that sounded? Well, it'd be what she deserved, after all...

Professor Ash was a little intimidating, Valentine thought. Maybe it was her tall frame, or her formal speech, or the way she had emphasized the word questions, but something about the woman rubbed Valentine the wrong way.
It didn't matter, though, not really. Whatever she personally thought of Professor Ash, the Professor was the one who would be giving out her first ever Pokemon, and that was an important step in the right direction, the official start of her own Pokemon adventure. She could survive chatting with an intimidating academic if it meant finally getting a Pokemon of her very own--after all, her travels would likely lead to much more dangerous situations down the road, and she wasn't scared of that!
It did seem like a lot of pressure, but it's not as though there was a bad starter Pokemon. Well, maybe one of the ones that couldn't attack at all, but that wouldn't happen, right? And the Professor said to think of it all as a game, after all. And Valentine liked games.
"Yeah, let's get started already!" Valentine's words were strong and sure, not betraying any of the uncertainty or hesitation that had been running through her mind. "Game on! Or whatever."

GAMELogan's father is a plastic surgeon, Logan's mother is in middle management at a big insurance firm, and Logan is... well, Logan is their kid, but after getting pulled out of public middle school to go to the fancy private school in town where all the rich people send their kids, he's aware that that isn't all that special in and of itself. Still, as an only child of parents who have provided him with every opportunity to succeed, he feels the need to do something with himself, be special, use all his good fortune to make a difference.
The problem is, he's... really not that special. Black hair, brown eyes, slightly short but not enough to stand out from the crowd, Logan blends in with the rest of his class at a glance, and further investigation won't much help to distinguish him, either. His grades are good, but not great, certainly not anything exceptional. He's alright athletically, but not some amazing athlete in the making. He's tried a few different extracurriculars over the years, but none of them stuck. Socially, he's a little awkward, his anxiety being especially active in that field.
He... likes running, maybe? Something about the repetition, maybe, or how it gives him something to do on his own, away from his house and without other people surrounding him. But he isn't that good at it, really--he barely squeaked onto the school track team, and something about the structure of it made him give it up after a month and a half anyway.
So out comes a fancy new VR pokemon game, and his first instinct was that Pokemon is baby stuff, not for a high schooler like him, but... at least it was baby stuff he enjoyed, right? And the whole VR aspect was interesting. Maybe it'd help if he could get in someone else's mind for a bit, not have to worry about how every interaction would affect him in real life.
He hadn't been planning on making a girl character in the game, but somehow it felt... right? Maybe it was just dividing the game from his everyday reality, like how his character's pink hair was every bit as brightly colored as his own hair wasn't. And hey, once he had that pink hair and wild outfit, Valentine seemed like a fitting name. He could always go by Val if it got weird. But it wasn't that weird, really, was it?

GAME Valentine's in her late teens; in another world she might have been going off to college, but as it was, she's just about to start on her Pokemon adventure! She's been living with her mom all these years, though her and her mom have very different explanations for why.
