Morgana stood in the middle of the meadow, tossing full-sized balls of yarn from a basket towards her Meowstic, Senga.
"Number of days in a year!"
<Meow.>
"Number of quarts in a gallon!"
<Meow.>
The white feline deftly bounced in place, knocking each yarn ball back towards Morgana with a combination of accuracy and psychic ability. To her credit, Bergamot was also able to catch them back in the basket. Why she was testing Senga's knowledge of random crap was unknown, it just felt right.
"Number of quarter-pounders in a pound!"
<Meow?>
"Ohohoho... very good." Morgana caught another yarn ball and threw the next one high. "Number of decimal places in pi!"
<Meow.>
"Do you think we knew each other in another life, Senga?" asked the villainess conversationally as they trained. Bergamot wasn't sure exactly which skill this was training, but it was an amusing excuse to throw yarn around and play with a cat. "I could swear we'd played DND together. Not that this isn't equally entertaining."
Morgana tossed another ball towards the Meowstic, but this one wasn't made of yarn. It was a doll's head, its false eyelashes fluttering in the wind as it fell towards Senga. <Meow?!>
"What do you mean? It's a creepy doll head," said Morgana, as if this was obvious. "I got it so we can bond under the principles of shared terror."
The head fell, and fell right through Senga's body. <Meow?!>
"Oh look, it worked!" Morgana exclaimed, pleased. She tip-tapped over and picked up the doll's head. Its hair was matted with grit from the ground, and its glassy eyes stared at her hauntingly. "You're a ghost-type now! I hope we can use the walk-through-walls cheat."
She screwed the doll head back onto its body and handed the full thing to Senga, who managed to materialize her paws enough to hold onto it. "There. Now you have something to hold onto besides my crowbar." Who ever heard of a cat with a crowbar?
Meowstic is now very rare (+15) Meowstic is now psychic/ghost type!

"Tomato, tomato," said Bergamot Gristleborg in response to Seta's answer, pronouncing both words the same way. "I'm great at winning." She had never done it before, but she was highly confident she would be a magnanimous, humble, and generous winner if it ever occurred.
Bergamot Gristleborg knew well that life could not be given.
It could only be taken. And Morgana would be the one to take it back.
As she stepped through the gate, her surroundings transformed. It was a novel sensation, like a band of pressure passing over her body. The dim nothingness of The Everworld was replaced by hot, dry air and bright sunlight. The clamor of people packed shoulder-to-shoulder in the crowded market swamped her senses as merchants called out enticingly, trying to draw customers to their stalls. And above it all, the mouthwatering tang of spice.
Morgana coughed. Her eyes watered.
What is this? What does this have to do with death, or Pokemon?
She looked down at her hands, trying to pull up her User Interface to check if she'd received a Quest Prompt. A directive. Something to instruct her of a way to make sense out of all the smells and sounds and shifty eyes in the bazaar, and lead her towards what was (honestly) a random Sneasel.
< COMPLETE THE TRIAL. >
That was all.
"Useless Hydance!" Bergamot tried to say, but her voice was drowned out by a barking street salesman. "Fine! I'll show you when I win!" Again, her voice was drowned out by the overwhelming thump and sizzle of meat hitting a smoking-hot grill, releasing a burst of steam, smoke, and spice that left the villainess coughing again. She stumbled back, rubbing her eyes.
Never in her life had she experienced anything so chaotic. Multitextured, multilayered, and worst of all, operating completely independently from Morgana herself. Trying to make a stir in all this noise would be like a flea dancing on a dog's back.
Here, she was nothing. Here, she had no control. No spotlight. No one to annoy or play with. Just her alone with a rich slice of humanity, and a reminder of how very, very small she was.

It was all gone. The Timberlands, Jack, her high heels, her 'Don't Call Me Dirty' T-shirt. It had all vanished like mist on a sunny morning, burned away by sleep and dreams. Morgana bubbled in her mud puddle, plotting sinister things. Her gills waved in the water, the murk of which failed to impact her in the slightest. As a Swimmer, she was used to being able to breathe underwater, but now it was like she was wearing a pair of permanent goggles. "Peep peep..." she said villainously, popping above the surface. There was a pause. She considered what she had said. "Just a moment," she said to the talking Totodile. She sat back on her haunches, using both front paws to make the opening-book motion that opened UNOVR's User Interface. To her immense relief, it opened normally. Thank goodness, was her first thought. Then she was immediately disappointed. What?! I'm not even stuck in the game? When was that plot going to happen?! After the body-swapping plot, obviously. Bergamot took stock of herself, reviewing her settings. "Well, everything seems normal," Bergamot said brightly, closing out of her settings. She could sense minute vibrations in the air around her, and realized it was coming from the fin on her head. She'd never realized how extraordinarily sensitive it was. She could tell without looking— and that was good, because her eyesight above water was terrible— that there were at least five other Pokemon in the clearing with them. "It's obvious, isn't it?" Her high, clear voice cut through the Totodile's confusion. "I am Bergamot Gristleborg, the greatest villain in UNOVR!"She attempted to flounce up to the little alligator, but had a difficult time coordinating her four legs to provide the exact quality of smugness she was going for. She ended up kind of skipping, two legs and then two legs, droplets of muddy water shedding from her slick blue sides. "Pray tell, traveler, what is this ungodly place? It reeks of do-gooders and good-doers— easy prey for a villainess like me!"

MUDKIP (JACK) | GYARADOS (RAINBOW) | PIPLUP (GUILLOTINE) Sarah Lee was onto her!
She should have seen the signs. Hadn't The Incredibles taught her anything about monologuing? She should have known it was only a matter of time before the chinese girl picked up on her devious plan to acquire the Muddy Boy/Girl trainer title (yes, that was it.) Sarah Lee was probably rolling in her bed at night, wishing she too could aspire to have such an excellent banner of merit flying above her username.
"So you've finally realized," Bergamot said, covering her face with one hand so that it shadowed her eyes. "Very good! Ha... ha... HA..."
She spread her hands. "Let's face it, Sarah Lee. I'm already so far ahead of you on the way to acquiring the Muddy Boy/Girl title," she gloated. "It's too late— my machinations are already almost complete. And I know your weakness."
Morgana spun around triumphantly, skirts flaring out in the waves of hot air coming off the nearby lava. "You don't have a Mudkip."
All of this dialogue was a distraction from the battlefield, which was absolutely sublime. The epic clash threw up clouds of steam as fuscia flames boiled from the fainting Focus, capturing Rainbow at the heart of the inferno. From above, a Waterfall opened up and poured down in a hundred-foot plunge from the heavens, cloaking the Gyarados in a curtain of crashing water.
Inferno.
Waterfall.
Health creeping down.
Health going back up.
Damage.
Heal.
The statues belching fireballs watched them hurtle down the watery drop like barrels, crashing over Rainbow's head. One by one, the Gyarados began to wear down. Steam and sparkles filled the air as water evaporated and caught the magenta light like faceted gemstones.
"NOOOOOO!" screamed Morgana in a sudden burst as she saw Rainbow's health touch 0.
The battle was over.
Later, Bergamot would approach Sarah Lee, claiming she'd merely 'forgotten to use her Z-Move' and 'if she had, she would have won' and 'I'll get you next time, and your little dog too' and all those other wonderful threats. One thing was for sure: they would be meeting again soon.

Morgana breezed into the circle of tents the good Professor Ash was calling a "lab" and began to snoop around.
First she checked the back tent. It was filled with field supplies, and Runerigus. The ghost Pokémon loomed menacingly, its painted segments rising into the air like the crumbled pieces of a broken arch. "Oops, wrong tent," said Morgana, quickly shutting the flap.
Much like Goldilocks in someone else's house, she went on to the next. This tent was filled with metal- stacked wall to wall with it, like hewn piles of timber. Had this been harvested from the Steppes?
The next tent had Professor Ash in it, typing away unbothered at her computer. Bergamot waved lasciviously.
"I'm here for my reward," she gloated, offering not just one, but TWO Duraludon Pokeballs to the Professor. "I'm relieved you're cleaning the area out of these monsters. They're a public nuisance."

Bergamot Gristleborg was fully aware that dreams were an integral part of the Misty Timberlands. Unfortunately, she seemed to have insomnia. "Honestly," she said to Jack, her Mudkip. "It should be a popup option. 'Sleep,' or something. 'Take a rest.' Like in Minecraft."
"Peep peep!" said Jack supportively, having no idea what she was talking about.
Jack was a Mudkip, not a real person, which made it difficult for him to say anything except 'peep' and sometimes 'peep peep.' Or perhaps Morgana was the difficult one for refusing to turn on his Pokemon Speech. Her theory was that if Pokemon were meant to talk, they would have developed proper larynxes naturally in the wild.
"Peep!" the water-type said again. He wagged his flat, finlike tail, putting his cold paws on her leg. It was like having someone set small dead fish on your legs while you were trying to take a nap.
"Ugh!" Bergamot said, trying again to will herself to sleep. "I'm sick of missing these events! Let me in already!" Now she knew how Maleficent felt after Sleeping Beauty's parents didn't invite her to their baby shower.
Maybe it was the pine needles digging into her back. Maybe it was the fact she was sleeping on the ground in a cold, damp forest filled with graveyards and mist. The few places which weren't soggy leaves and mushrooms were full of pink flowers, which, villainous as Morgana claimed to be, she wasn't going to lay on just because they looked comfortable.
"Peep peep..."
"What?!"
Morgana sat up. There was a light in the mist that hadn't been there before. She narrowed her eyes, trying to focus on it. Nearby tree boughs sagged as they crystallized, turning to stone in the beam of her gaze. Jack let out a mournful peep as a gust of wind blew back her hair, bringing a new scent along with it. It smelled like—
It smelled like...
Story.
"There we go," Bergamot murmured, head thumping back down onto the leaf litter. She could barely feel it— the world was drifting away, growing fuzzy and dark at the edges. "That's... what I was..." She yawned, then fell asleep.
Jack yawned too— to show empathy— and curled up on her chest to drool and wait.

Chryssa was not a 'handy' person to have around the house. She couldn't use a drill. She couldn't sew a button. She probably couldn't even set the clock on the microwave. However, she did consider herself to have land vehicle proficiency (wheelchairs) and that made her the natural choice to wrangle the out-of-control lawnmower in the back yard. She could hardly tear her eyes away from the raging orange beast as it roared in circles around the pool, shredding valuable components and eviscerating innocent patches of Tall Grass. Finnegan Fjord clipping through the wall and landing in the kitchen finally brought her back to reality, and Morgana put her hands on her hips to laugh. "Ohohoho! Attic, schmattic!" she contributed positively while she tried to figure out which Pokemon would work best against a sentient weed-whipper. Fortunately, orioncayge moved faster than she did. "One of you find that fucking Nokia going off and tell them that if its about the extended warranty on the mower they can fuck themselves." While Finn disappeared into the attic, Bergamot went hunting for the phone. "A-ha! No treasure can escape these eyes," she said cunningly, tracking the muffled ringtone to the couch. Is it between the cushions? she wondered, rummaging blindly in the space between them. Her hand closed around something cool and she pulled out a small, military-grade combat drone. ... "Well, well, well," she finally said, recovering. "Dad's backstory strikes again..." Drone strikes, that is. "Well, it's fine! We can probably dismantle this for the robot." What were they building again? Ignoring whatever war crimes Dad was probably involved in, Bergamot finally found the Nokia under the couch. The sofa had been moved away from the wall so the wall could be painted— it had probably been moved on top of the phone without anyone noticing. The screen with its huge, LED pixels was lit up a periwinkle blue, easy to see when she peeked underneath. Since it was ringing, Bergamot picked it up. "A-lo-ha~"
Back at the Junkyard, Guillotine watched in deep dismay as Buzzster Hooperham obliterated the junkpile with a giant laser. That said, surely the Skarmory would be too distracted to take it out on a poor little penguin with training wheels, right? Morgana was trying a new 'evil witch' persona recently. The 'evil' part wasn't so new, but pretending to have a hunchback and shambling up like a wicked Disney character was a fun new spin on her usual villainy. "Apple, milady?" she lisped, grinning toothlessly (though she had all her teeth) at the girl she'd caught in the Wanted Board square. The blonde had all the telltale signs of a new player: default equipment, no custom titles, no Running Shoes. Perfect prey for troll players like Morgana, who made it their business to be as annoying to unsuspecting players as possible. The so-called 'apple' she offered, though red and shiny, was nothing of the kind (Morgana had already eaten all her apples earlier that day). It was a Pokeball. And because they were at the Wanted Board location, a little tooltip appeared above the ball, showing a small thumbnail of the Magnemite inside. "Ooooh, but it'll cost you!" Bergamot pulled the ball back enticingly, eyeing andromeda with a fake squint. "Something valuable. Something... irreplacable. Perhaps a... childhood memory... or the taste of salt. Or perhaps..." What would a new player like this have? Her eyes flashed triumphantly, gray as ghosts. "...Yes, yes. That's it. Your starter Pokemon."She was absolutely giddy. This was the evilest thing she'd done in forever. INCOMING TRADE REQUEST: MAGNEMITE FOR SCORBUNNY ACCEPT? <YES/NO>

Morgana watched as the blonde teen ran down the slope to get away from their conversation, throwing Pokeballs at the Duraludon. Bergamot threw one too, of course. She hadn't come all this way to not-catch a Duraludon. Though that hadn't been the way this journey began. She'd been going somewhere.
Go North...
How had she gotten turned around, anyway?
This smelled of something suspicious from top to bottom, but Morgana leaned in on Yggy's reaction. Never had her role as a villainess been so objectively clear: if the girl was scared of Kyogre, Bergamot absolutely had to get that Kyogre on her. Could she trick her? Convince her? Swap it out at the last second? Spin a story?
"I was in Beta, as a matter of fact," said Morgana, carefree, collecting the Duraludon. "But I don't think Kyogre is scary at all. It's a big, glitchy whale." She tossed her head, looking up at Yggy with a too-bright smile. "You're projecting your fear of something else, aren't you? You're scared of something else."
The dumbfounded look on the teen's face told her she was right, and she dug in harder, lowering her voice to a dramatic whisper. "Perhaps it's the ocean. Depths? Drowning? Or perhaps it was what happened during the High Tide Raid itself. Are you scared of Codie? Being blasted? Being deleted?"
Morgana stood with the cold northern wind blowing through her hair, skirts shifting, Poison Gas billowing away from her body. She summoned her Kyogre egg in one hand and thrust it out before her, aimed at Yggy Br00ks, who recoiled at the sight.
"This," Bergamot articulated clearly, "Is a game."
Perhaps that wasn't what Yggy was expecting her to say.
"You don't have to be afraid. This isn't a place to indulge fear." The geometric red lines of the egg pulsed, showing the life within. Her face was backlit, blazing. "This is the place to destroy it."

Bergamot Gristleborg may have been an immortal (and fictional) video game villain, but Chryssa Glasgow had her fair history with death.
She was, some would say, obsessed.
Infatuated with. Terrified of. Engaged to, one way or another, by the threads of fate or will of God or simply overactive imagination. In-game, she would stand and laugh before she sacrificed herself for another. Out of game, she would shield herself with hundreds, backstab those closest to her, and do anything it took to avoid that dark hand of eternity.
She was well aware eternity was not an ending. It was a cycle: neverending, ongoing, death and life and death again. Some took solace in that fact. Chryssa took only offense.
"I am here," she announced, the tap, tap of her stiletto heels echoing in the hall of deep vermilion. "To claim a lost soul!"
The Swimmer's eyes glittered like polished stones as the grayness of Seta approached, bleeding color from the world. "...That random Sneasel!" she announced, as if delivering a particularly apt punch line. "It's hip. It's dope. And if you won't give it to me, I'll steal it from your halls. You'll rue the day you crossed Bergamot Gristleborg! Nothing will stop me. Not time, not fear, not death!"
Her breath rattled in her throat for a moment. Somehow, she suddenly found it hard to breathe. To speak. Her hands shook. One strayed to her side, as if to grip the hilt of a sword, and came away empty.
Eyes glued to Seta, wavering on the line between hilarious and heretical, she mouthed again, Give it to me.

"I knew I had something I wanted to sacrifice," declared Bergamot Gristleborg, producing a Dewpider in its Pokeball. She had caught the arachnid while it was having a beautiful dream in the Misty Timberlands, but to tell the truth, she had no intention of using it. It was water-type, benefiting her trainer class, but something about it reminded her of viruses in biology class and the whole thing made her uncomfortable considering the global pandemic that had just happened. Or had it? Were they pretending this world had been miraculously spared? She could work with that too.
"I banish thee!" Bergamot cried, tossing the Pokeball into the air. Lightning sparked around the capsule and it disappeared in a thunderclap, returning to the Everworld. Not that Morgana would ever visit. The villainess was too selfish to try and do things for other people/Pokémon.

MUDKIP (JACK) | GYARADOS (RAINBOW) | PIPLUP (GUILLOTINE) "Ohohohoho!" Bergamot laughed behind her hand, radiating confidence. "I suppose you didn't expect my Mudkip, Piplup, and Magikados to be so powerful!"
Actually, Bergamot was surprised too. When had her Pokemon actually become effective? They'd always been supreme losers before. It simply had to be because they were fighting Sarah Lee, the Fire-Type Wonder Extraordinaire, and Morgana herself was the Water-Type Wonder Extra-Extrordinaire.
She'd envisioned this fight going differently. Cursing Sarah Lee's name as she fled the arena with her fainted Pokemon, leaving ugly promises of revenge behind along with an ominous prophecy (still a work in progress). What was she meant to expect now? Standing over the groveling Sarah Lee in a power shot with the camera pointed up at her chin as she cackled triumphantly? That wasn't bad.
"I'm going to win!" Bergamot celebrated her early victory, definitely not raising any flags.
As Charizard's Flare Blitz rocketed towards Rainbow, the sea serpent bucked like a many-segmented bronco. It flailed, it rolled, it buffed itself. Bergamot could have made some quick calculations at this point, but she went for the drama instead. "Guillotine, protect Rainbow!"
The Piplup turned over her shoulder to stare at Morgana. Here she was, taking on two sets of Sweeper attacks, fencing with Focus's Fire Blast with jets of Water Gun, and her trainer wanted her to leave herself completely open and concentrate on saving that overgrown Magikarp?
...But she was nothing if not obedient.
Guillotine heaved a sigh, surrendering herself over. As Treecko siphoned every bit of energy from her body, she acted, throwing up a Whirlpool shield to cloak Rainbow just before the Charizard barreled into her with every part of its body on fire. Steam burst from the impact, rising high into the arched ceiling of the rolling battlefield. When the smoke cleared, Gyarados was miraculously untouched.
Too bad Guillotine wasn't. As the last Fire Blast surged towards her undefended form, she had no defense: only a counterattack. Quickly spying the five weak points in the 大-shaped blast, she let off a volley of Water Gun bullets, one between each arm of the tremendous move. Before she took full damage, she closed her eyes, hoping the brief volley was enough to at least take the purple fox with her.
Guillotine uses water gun x5 on focus for 302 DMG This left Rainbow alone.
It continued to roll and flail like an earthworm on the sidewalk, healing itself even as the energy drain wore at its body, and abruptly shot into the sky. Bergamot's Swimmer ability allowed her water-types extreme mobility in the air, and Guillotine sought cover above the rolling floors and the surging fireballs that burst out from the giant statue's mouth. She flew up and above the crown of the giant carved face, seeking cover from the attacks to come.
"...Watch out. I'm going to use my Z-Move next turn," Bergamot said cunningly, preparing her Z-Pose still in her stupid "Don't Call Me Dirty" T-shirt. This was an absolute bluff, and honestly just an attempt to distract and intimidate Sarah Lee. Would it work? Find out next time on They See Me Rollin' [Sarah Lee]!
