As soon as the tutorial began proper, Laguna simply zoned out. She had seen this exact same tutorial shown game after game, without any major changes, since she was incredibly young. She sighed, turning to face Big Bee.
"I swear, you would think they'd change this by now. I get it's a kid-friendly game series, it always has to be available to new players and the like. But you'd think they'd have like, an option just to say no thanks?" Honestly, it seemed like common practice at this rate. It was weirder that they were so adamant about never changing the tutorial, than anything else.
"... Speaking of kids, when the beta is over, I fully expect to see children everywhere. But like, of course, they're not gonna look like children. Or even sound like them. Weird." She hummed to herself, watching COD13 finally catch the Zigzagoon. She sighed once more, imagining she was finally free.
And then she read the popup in front of Bee, and her confusion grew even more. There really was no option to just, leave huh? Even the WOW! option probably went on for another several minutes. "You know what? Yeah, sure. I could probably catch something! Maybe we'll find something interesting. What kind of Pokemon have you been on the lookout for? Anything specific?"

This was not what she had expected at all.
Everworld. The underworld of UNOVR. A place where Pokemon that had "Died" She always wondered how the game would handle this, but this was... almost too real. It was clear a ton of effort was put into this place, what was the lore? Who was this stranger that sapped the color from everything?
Her legs felt weak as she stood there, blinking in thought.
Was it possible Glacia didn't want to return? She had her heroic sacrifice, helped save Beta Island, and now had her rest.
And yet, based on what Seta had said, if she didn't bring Glacia back, someone else would. Was there no sanctity in death in this world? She frowned, staring at the ground for a few moments before she eventually just spoke.
"Glacia, is a hero." She'd start off with that, eventually forcing herself to look up at the faceless individual before her. "She sacrificed herself so that we could save her home. She had only been alive for such a short amount of time, and yet she had more courage than any other Pokemon I know. I know I pushed the button, but she made the decision."
"I know her. Such a kind soul does not deserve to be doomed before their time. Glacia deserves to see how their sacrifice has helped people. How they helped save everyone and everything. Wandering these halls forever unaware if we won, is a fate I would never wish on anyone. This time, she'll survive. Become the hero she's destined to be." She stared up at the figure, a passion burning in her eyes.
"But more importantly, I know she wants to be held in my arms again. She's always been a cuddly girl. So tell me, how must I change? I'll do whatever it takes."

This island is not mine.
A voice echoed in her head, and Laguna is physically shaken. Steam obscured everything, and for what felt like forever, Laguna swore that she had made a mistake. She couldn't see, her pokemon were recalled, there was nothing to protect her from what was coming.
It is yours.
"M-mine?" Before anything can even answer her question, her eyes nearly burn as a bright orb makes itself known. The Red Orb burns with power and heat, primal energy blasting through the entire cavern. She could feel the heat, almost overpowering. All it took was a look around the room to see everyone's pokemon had transformed, blessed with the strength of the earth.
She quickly sent out her pokemon, only see that they had been transformed from within their own Pokeballs. In fact, the balls themselves had glowings lines all across them.
Marina her Popplio, who had been inside her Pokeball the whole time had no idea what was going on, but the power glowed all along her fins, magmatic power fueling her veins.
Such was the same with her other pokemon, her Squirtle's shell lines were glowing with lines of magma, and her Froakie's limbs were imbued with a simular power.
And it was at this moment, where Laguna laughed.
She couldn't hold it in any more, tears spilled down her face even as she laughed. As the ceiling itself splits open and light blesses them with its presence once more, she continues to laugh. It's a joyous, overwhelmed emotion that threatens to overtake her entirely.
Glacia's sacrifice wasn't for nothing, she was here in spirit. Her heroic soul was in all of them, or at least that's what she wanted to think. Even her. She could be a hero to this world, too.
The geyser blasts them all into the surface, and her water pokemon swim through the heated water with glee, spinning all around her as they soared up into the air.
It was easy to forget the island itself was glitching to no tomorrow, with good portions of it previously deleted. With a blink, a good number of trees within eye-sight blinked into a bright buggy texture-less purple. With every blink.
As an artist, this fascinated her, but not enough to distract her from her mission. In fact, it was COD13's audible confusion that brought the biggest smile possible to her face.
"You missed, asshole!" She let out as loud a cry as she could, landing onto the ground above with a thud.
"Now, everyone, let loose everything you got! Overwhelm that buggy p-o-s!" Just as before, her Squirtle and Froakie who had been here from the beginning, blasted their signature moves together. Hoppy standing atop Sheldon's shell, the Squirtle slid down the earth with impressive speed as their Water Pulses combined, blasting into the side of the massive Porygon. Froakie could barely keep itself standing upright by the end, but he was working hard to stand strong. He had to get revenge for his favorite piece of driftwood, after all. He had no idea if it was still there, and that made him furious.
In her hands, Laguna held Marina up high. The seal pokemon was slow on land, so she ran forwards with her as an Icy Wind swept up. The shards of ice forming larger and larger, slamming into COD13 over and over again.
Before she could revel in her and her fellow players eventual victory, another blink was all it took for her to slip into the ground. A misplaced foot, a broken texture, and she suddenly tumbled straight through the ground. "What the-"
She spoke out loud, trying to get her balance and look upwards, but it seemed down below the map was void of physics, and she just kept on tumbling. There was nothing else to do, except perhaps report the bugs in the hope that COD13 would be even more distracted.
Typing while twisting around and around was hell on her stomach, but she had to push through. Her pokemon were counting on her to do something.

For a brief moment, there was quiet and peace. It was almost unsettling, seeing how dead and quiet the world was now. Parts of it seemed alive and full of life, the Crater seemed to be buzzing around like usual, but her lovely Coastline was in tatters. The digital remains of the miniature COD13's were scattered across the world, and she finally took a moment to pause and breathe.
And then she noticed the messages.
Players were deleted, and they needed help. What even did that mean? They weren't actually here, right? Was it some major buggy nightmare-scape their consciousnesses were subjected to? How could Hydance even let this happen? Even for a Beta, this was legitimately a traumatizing experience, and way too meta to seem planned.
She was quick to attempt to reply, hoping that by some glitch in the code that it would get through to them.
"trying my best. be safe. unplug if you can if it gets bad. just be safe. - L"
And so she did the only thing she could. She went back to the Crater just like the messages said. A new opening had been made in the attack, a secret cave. It would have been intriguing, it would have been cool, and exciting if the circumstances of her arrival didn't foretell even more danger ahead.
The Bedrock Shrine stood intimidating before her, the sheer pressure of the situation almost overpowering. Other players were already here as if they had realized the choice that suddenly came up on the tooltip.
Pray or Sacrifice.
Laguna had no doubt that this was a shrine to Groudon, to equal the power of Kyogre. Perhaps someone, or perhaps something, could counter-act the primal-infused COD13. After all, it had Kyogre's strength, and if there was anything that could defeat Kyogre...
Her Pokemon seemed unaware of the difficult choice ahead of her, their own excitement and eagerness to explore overriding their fear. All except one.
Glacia stared at the shrine, the Bergmite smarter than it looked. It was born at the High Tide Shrine, it understood the over-powering presence of the shrines. But perhaps more importantly, their kind soul only needed to look at the other trainers to know what was going on.
"Glacia..." Laguna spoke, kneeling down to hug her Bergmite gently in her arms after she quickly recalled the others. "I know what it suggested, and I know what others have probably done, but-"
The Bergmite said nothing, only closing its eyes as it enjoyed the warm hug for all it was before it just nodded. Or perhaps more accurately, shook its whole body in a nod.
Laguna fought back a few tears, nodding her head back as she approached the shrine, ice-pokemon held ever so reverently in her arms. She spoke, praying even as she made up the mind to sacrifice. "Groudon... A pretender has claimed your rival's eternal power. A pretender claims to dictate what is right, and wrong, what deserves to exist or not. This island, is yours, is it not? The land and all that walks upon its domain owe its very life to you. And so," She holds up Bergmite over her head, the small, physically weak pokemon standing as proudly as it physically could. The fight before had not been kind to its health.
"We beseech thee, to right these wrongs. To show that the island is yours to rule! Please, take this Pokemon, her valiant spirit, her passion, and her sweet soul. Let Glacia be a part of you!" She knew it was a video game, that everything was coded, but to her pokemon? The NPCs? It was too real to not be passionate about wanting to protect it.
And with that, the Bergmite closed her eyes, comfortable and accepting with her place. She hadn't lived long, but to her, this world was the only one she knew. Such a heroic soul could not accept any other option than self-sacrifice. Active: Bergmite (93/350) Sacrificed
Standby: Squirtle (300/350) Froakie (50/150) Popplio (150/150) Litten (100/100)

If Laguna was mad before, she was furious this time. The coastline was in tatters, code ripped apart like a virtual wasteland. It genuinely broke her heart, despite knowing just how digital and virtual it was. It could probably be rebuilt, but that didn't make any of the suffering these digital creatures had any less real.
She watched in total shock as an Oshawott was just... deleted. It was a far cry from the relative safety that the Crater was blessed with. Down here, it was a nightmare.
Her eyes briefly glanced over at the building she had helped patch up, boarding up a window, only to find a mini-COD13 attempting to chew away at it.
Her face burned with fury as she called out for her pokemon. And sure enough, they seemed equally outraged. Her Squirtle and Froakie were born here, lived here, and were caught here. They all joined her team here, this was an important area for them.
And they were furious themselves.
"You guys know the deal! Water Pulse! Make those Porygons, gone!" Squirtle immediately filled water within his cheeks, spraying a huge blast of water, clearing the building they were protecting. Froakie, meanwhile, was desperately attempting to defend its favorite piece of driftwood. Bouncing around, shooting pulse after pulse of water at anything who drew near.
"Glacia, Avalanche!" Bergmite immediately readied another blast of ice, the sheets slamming down into the beach, and squishing only a few, but every single attack counted. These Mini-COD13s were simply too quick.
Laguna herself slowly glanced around, a frown suddenly forming on her face. "Wasn't... there more people here earlier?" Active: Squirtle (300/350) Froakie (50/150) Bergmite (93/350)
Standby: Popplio (150/150) Litten (100/100)

Laguna was mad.
Beta Island had become like her new home away from home. Her getaway from the rules of reality, from the harsh world they all truly lived in. Something to help them all forget, to dream and imagine a world that was better.
People had worked their hardest to protect the area from Kyogre's wrath, but it wasn't enough. Barricades that people made seemed to slow the Mini-COD13's down, but that was their only saving grace. This very world was tearing itself apart, because it wasn't perfect. Because it had bugs, because it was untested, because it was flawed. But that didn't matter.
What did matter, was getting revenge on that abusive AI. Everything else could follow later. Her own Pokemon could feel the anger rising from her, their own determination building as they traveled into the Crater. The preparations for Kyogre were part of the game, an expected confrontation. This was different, this was self-preservation.
"Sheldon, Hoppy. You guys know what to do." Water Pulses flew once more, the two happy to just keep spraying like a fire hose, even if her Froakie was getting exhausted.
"Glacia?" She looked at the tiny iceberg still held in her arms, a growing grin on her face. "Avalanche. For real, this time."
As soon as her Bergmite heard that, she couldn't resist smiling a mile wide. Standing at the top edge of the crater, the iceberg slammed her feet. Roaring with the impressive might of the mountain as snow and ice filled the area all around her before all of a sudden-
It all came tumbling down.
An avalanche roared down the hill, slamming into miniature COD13's and burying them underneath frozen stones.
Laguna looked proud, for just the briefest moment until an an angry looking Litten leaped up from the edge of the crater, confronting her. The avalanche had likely ruined their home, and it was understandably a bit upset.
"Hey, look, I'm trying to save this place. Come with me, and you can help too, okay?" The Litten looked around, it's eyes canning the devesation. Before it can even attempt to respond, a Golden Pokeball bopped it on the head, capturing the Pokemon.
"Let's go," She spoke to her Pokemon, already readying her map. "We have to protect somewhere else." Active: Squirtle (310/350) Froakie (70/150) Bergmite (93/350)
Standby: Popplio (150/150) Litten (Just caught, will do HP calculations later, aaa)
Attacks: Squirtle: Charge Attack = 63
Froakie: Fast Attack x2 = 34
Bergmite: Charge Attack = 38
Crater: -5 HP = 117 HP Mini-Cod13s: 140-135= 5 Remaining

For the briefest of moments, Laguna debated whether this was all planned as beams of energy blasted her and her pokemon. Whether the company behind all this would get all meta with their first raid in beta, there really was no right answer. All that mattered was winning.
Well, not dying in the meantime would be preferable as well.
The blast seared away at her Bergmite, who worked valiantly to protect her. She stood as tall as she could, protecting her trainer who had hunkered down in the sand of the beach.
And the next thing she knew, the cannon was swinging to another target, Glacia clearly struggling to stay standing tall in the blast of such a massive blow to her HP all at once.
"You did great, Glacia!" Laguna shouted out praise, clambering up as she sent out her pokemon once more. As soon as she did, she grasped the Bergmite into her arms once more and held them above her head.
"Hoppy, Sheldon," She spoke to her Froakie and Squirtle to get their attention. "Glacia, it's time! Unleash everything you got again! Take out this defective anti-virus like it's everything you got!"
Once again, Water Pulses blasted from her other two pokemon and slammed into the side of COD13. Another wave of ice attempted to slam into the boss program, but with his recent massive blow, it was clear that Glacia was having a hard time aiming properly, the ice chunks glancing off their side.
"That's okay, girl, you just keep going! Fight with everything you got!" Laguna in Zone A
